Olympiakos 2-1 West Ham: Hammers' Unbeaten Record Ends in Greece

West Ham United's remarkable unbeaten streak in European competitions came to an end as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Karaiskakis Stadium in a UEFA Europa League (UEL) matchday three showdown against Olympiacos.

Before this match, West Ham had maintained an impressive 17-game unbeaten run in European competition, setting a new English record.

However, their undefeated status was in serious jeopardy by halftime. Olympiacos' captain, Kostas Fortounis, proved to be a constant threat, orchestrating plays and driving his team into the lead with a powerful strike from the edge of the box, marking his 11th goal in European club football.

As the first half drew to a close, the hosts extended their advantage when Angelo Ogbonna inadvertently sliced Rodinei's cross into his own net.

The Hammers encountered significant difficulties in Greece but had an opportunity to turn the tide 10 minutes into the second half.

Emerson Palmieri found Danny Ings in the box, but Ings could only send his shot over the bar, reflecting his dwindling confidence as he now went 20 games without a goal, marking the longest goal drought of his career. Olympiacos also had their chances to widen the gap, with Sotoris Alexandropoulos displaying his prowess.

On loan from Sporting CP, Alexandropoulos attempted a long-range shot that narrowly missed the target and saw another shot saved by Alphonse Areola.

In an effort to salvage the match, David Moyes introduced Lucas Paquetá in the second half. However, the Brazilian midfielder almost handed Olympiacos an opportunity to seal the game when he lost possession, but Areola came to the rescue, denying Sotiris Alexandropoulos.

Nonetheless, Paquetá gave West Ham a glimmer of hope as he unleashed a magnificent volley from the edge of the area just minutes before stoppage time.

Despite being granted eight additional minutes at the end of the match, West Ham couldn't find an equalizer, thus ending their unbeaten streak.

This victory revitalizes Diego Martínez's Olympiacos, instilling hope that they can progress from their group, which also includes SC Freiburg, who defeated Backa Topola in Group A's other match, drawing level with West Ham at the top of the group with six points.
