Olympique de Marseille 2-2 Stade de Reims: Marseille rescue point against Reims in entertaining Ligue 1 clash

Roberto De Zerbi managed to secure a draw in his competitive home debut as Olympique de Marseille faced a spirited Stade de Reims, resulting in an engaging 2-2 stalemate at the Stade Vélodrome. This match marked the first occasion in six encounters that both teams shared points.

Stade de Reims, having suffered a defeat against Lille in their opening match while playing with ten men, contrasted sharply with Marseille's impressive five-goal victory over Brest.

The home side continued their strong form against the team from the Grand Est, taking the lead midway through the first half. Amine Harit executed a brilliant first-time finish into the bottom right corner after receiving a precise pass from Quentin Merlin on the left wing.

Given that Reims had only one clean sheet in their last 22 away matches in the topflight, it was unsurprising that they struggled to contain Marseille's persistent offensive efforts.

Elye Wahi missed several prime scoring opportunities before halftime, his lack of precision evident as Reims goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf delivered a series of remarkable saves, complemented by defender Joseph Okumu's exceptional goal-line clearance, which frustrated the home supporters.

As is often the case in football, Marseille's earlier missed chances came back to haunt them when Reims turned the match around shortly after the second half began.

Sergio Akieme capitalized on a rebound, striking an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box into the near post. This was followed by a stunning solo goal from Yaya-Kader Fofana, who, in his first Ligue 1 start, skillfully navigated past Marseille's entire right flank before deceiving Leonardo Balerdi and scoring from a tight angle past Gerónimo Rulli.

In his inaugural Ligue 1 appearance, the player from Ivory Coast effectively neutralized Marseille’s entire right flank, subsequently deceiving Leonardo Balerdi to score his team’s second goal past Gerónimo Rulli from an extremely acute angle.

Energized by the support of their home fans, Marseille came close to scoring when Jonathan Rowe hit the crossbar, but they ultimately equalized through another English player. Mason Greenwood capitalized on a rebound, heading the ball in from close range after Diouf deflected Quentin Merlin’s shot.

With more than fifteen minutes left on the clock, the stage was set for an exhilarating conclusion; however, neither team was able to secure a winning goal, resulting in a draw that marked the first shared points since December 2021.

This stalemate signifies Marseille's first setback of the season, while Luka Elser can take pride in Reims’ performance in the second half, even as they continue their quest for a first league victory this season.
