Ons Jabeur defeats Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets in WTA Finals

No.7 Ons Jabeur defeated No.6 Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 6-3 in round-robin play at the GNP Seguros WTA Finals Cancun in a rematch of the Wimbledon final.

Jabeur's straight-set victory moves her to 1-1 in the Chetumal Group, while Vondrousova falls to 0-2. The result, combined with No.2 Iga Swiatek's straight-set win over No.3 Coco Gauff, means the group is still up in the air as the final day of group play approaches.

Swiatek leads the group with a 2-0 record and is in prime position to qualify. Gauff and Jabeur are tied for second place in the group at 1-1, while Vondrousova, at 0-2, still has a mathematical chance to advance.

On Friday, Jabeur will square off against Swiatek while Vondrousova will take on Gauff.

Both Jabeur and Vondrousova entered Wednesday's match looking to rebound from tough first-round losses in Cancun. Jabeur only won one game against Gauff, while Vondrousova blew an opening set lead against Swiatek, losing in straight sets.

Playing for the first time since losing to Vondrousova in the Wimbledon final, Jabeur recovered to end a three-match losing streak to the Czech.

In the first game, she broke Vondrousova and held off the crafty left-hander. It was a tense set, with a break point in all but one service game. Jabeur handled the pressure better, saving six of seven break points and winning the first set after 57 minutes.

The second set was close until Jabeur broke it at 3-3. She took advantage of Vondrousova's sloppy service game to break at love and consolidate with a love hold.

She sealed the victory one game later, finishing the 89-minute match with her sixth break.
