Osaka falls to Bronzetti in Madrid Open first round

Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, was eliminated in the first round of the Madrid Open on Tuesday, suffering a defeat of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 against Lucia Bronzetti.

The former world number one from Japan, currently ranked 55th, made a strong comeback in the second set after losing the first, but ultimately fell short against her resolute Italian rival.

"From the outside maybe it seems easy but when you're on the court against a great champion like her it's always difficult - I'm proud with how I managed the match," said Bronzetti.

"She hit the ball very strong... I tried to make some variation in my game like drop shot, I got a lot of points with that."

Osaka, who is still regaining her form following a 15-month hiatus from tennis and last competed at the Miami Open in March, had two break points in the fourth game of the first set, which she failed to convert.

Bronzetti managed to break in the seventh game and successfully served it out, but Osaka responded with determination. The 27-year-old achieved three breaks of serve while allowing one, which led to a decisive third set.

However, Osaka quickly lost a break and, despite reclaiming her serve at 3-3 after converting her fifth break point of the game, was broken again immediately after.

Bronzetti secured victory when Osaka stumbled while attempting to reach a cross-court shot. The Italian player will now face American world number five Madison Keys in the second round.

"I played against her two times, it's going to be a real tough match like today," said Bronzetti.
