Osaka, Kvitova crash out in Indian Wells first round

Former champion Naomi Osaka was eliminated from the Indian Wells tournament following a first-round loss to Colombia's Camila Osorio, with a score of 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday.
The four-time Grand Slam winner from Japan struggled to find her rhythm against Osorio's aggressive shot-making and accumulated numerous unforced errors during the cool evening in the California desert.
After Osorio's nearly perfect performance in the opening set, Osaka managed to stave off a match point at 5-3 in the second set, much to the crowd's excitement.
However, Osorio seemed to feel the pressure as she attempted to serve for the match in the subsequent game, committing two double faults and falling behind 0-40.
Despite this, she regained her composure, saving four break points in that game and delivering a powerful forehand winner that landed on the line, allowing her to progress in the tournament, which she celebrated with a dance on the court under the lights.
"First, good evening everyone, I'm Camila Osorio," she said with a laugh in an on-court interview.
"It's crazy for me, it's a dream come true. I really wanted to play on this court and was really excited and looking forward to playing a champion like Naomi, so I can't believe it."
World number 53 Osorio has made history by becoming the first Colombian woman to defeat a former world number one. She is set to face 22nd seed Clara Tauson from Denmark in the second round.
This match marked Osaka's return to competition after her withdrawal from the Australian Open third round due to an abdominal strain.
Osaka, who claimed her inaugural career title by defeating Daria Kasatkina in the Indian Wells final in 2018, seemed to struggle with the consistency of her ball toss and the precision of her shots from both sides.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova also faced an early elimination, falling to France's Varvara Gracheva with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
This defeat leaves Kvitova in search of her first victory since resuming her career after the birth of her first child last July. She had also lost in the first round in Austin last week, marking her return to the tour after a 16-month hiatus.
Kvitova secured the first set as both competitors battled with their serve, but Gracheva found her rhythm to equalize the match before taking a 3-1 lead in the final set.
Kvitova rallied to win three consecutive games, gaining a 4-3 advantage, but Gracheva regained control, dominating the last three games to eliminate the tournament wildcard and advance to face Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva.
Gracheva expressed her admiration for Kvitova, commending her ability to balance the responsibilities of motherhood with her professional athletic career.
"Because she had a child quite recently and I'm so happy that she now has the role of a mother and a tennis player, which is very demanding," she added.
"It's very inspiring for sports, athletes, women - it's just amazing. Petra, my admiration to you - you're the best."
French player Caroline Garcia, a compatriot of Gracheva, progressed to the second round following her victory over American Bernarda Pera with a score of 6-3, 6-4. She is set to face the defending champion, Iga Swiatek, in her next match.
Belarusian Victoria Azarenka successfully overcame American Clervie Ngounoue, winning 6-4, 7-6(7), thereby commencing her quest for a third title at Indian Wells with a positive result.
On the men's side, Kei Nishikori triumphed in a thrilling encounter against Spain's Jaume Munar, securing a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(3) victory. The Japanese athlete will next compete against 18th-seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the second round.
British player Cam Norrie delivered a commanding performance against Italy's Luca Nardi, winning decisively with a score of 6-0, 6-3, which sets up a second-round clash with Czech 23rd seed Jiri Lehecka.
American qualifier Colton Smith marked his 22nd birthday by achieving his first ATP Tour main draw victory, defeating Flavio Cobolli with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Smith capitalized on seven of his nine break-point opportunities and was greeted with a rendition of "Happy Birthday" from the audience following his win over the Italian.
Additionally, American Marcos Giron, Russian Roman Safiullin, and Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands were among the other competitors who advanced to the second round of the Masters 1000 event.
