Osaka makes winning return in Brisbane International

The 26-year-old spent nearly two hours on the court at the Brisbane International, battling against the determined German player Tamara Korpatsch. Eventually, Osaka emerged victorious with a 6-3, 7-6 win on Pat Rafter Arena.

Reflecting on her performance, Osaka admitted to feeling a mix of nerves and excitement before the match. As a four-time Grand Slam champion, she recognized the importance of facing tough opponents early on, as it would help her prepare for future challenges.

Osaka acknowledged that she never underestimates her opponents, understanding that every match is a test. She expressed satisfaction with her level of play and felt proud of her performance.

After taking a break from tennis in September 2022 due to mental health concerns, Osaka rediscovered her passion for the game after giving birth to her baby girl in July. This motivated her to make a comeback for the 2024 season.

In the match against Korpatsch, Osaka displayed her skills right from the start, breaking her opponent's serve and comfortably winning the first set. However, the second set proved to be more challenging as Korpatsch fought back, putting pressure on Osaka.

Although Osaka had a chance to close out the match at 5-4, she faced a setback when her serve was broken. The set went to a tiebreak, where both players had opportunities to seize the advantage. Osaka missed two match points, while Korpatsch had two set points. Ultimately, Osaka triumphed on her third chance with a powerful forehand shot.

Speaking after the match, Osaka shared that becoming a mother had changed her perspective on the game. She admitted that in the past, she hadn't fully appreciated the support from fans and fellow players. Now, she aims to reciprocate the love and support she receives and expressed gratitude for the fans who came out to cheer for her.

Osaka further expressed, "Her daughter has played a significant role in my rapid personal growth. She has truly accelerated my maturity."

Additionally, she acknowledged, "Beyond the tennis court, I have developed a heightened sense of empathy towards others and a deeper appreciation for them, including my opponents."
