Osimhen’s penalty secures Galatasaray win over Liverpool

Victor Osimhen was the hero in Istanbul as his first-half penalty secured Galatasaray a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League group stage. The Nigerian striker’s strike not only gave the Turkish champions their first points of the campaign but also extended Liverpool’s misery with a second straight defeat in all competitions.
Galatasaray Strike First
Liverpool arrived at Rams Park looking to bounce back from their shock Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace, but the intimidating Istanbul atmosphere proved unforgiving. The hosts wasted little time in showing intent, with Barış Yılmaz forcing Alisson into an early one-on-one save.

Moments later, the Reds were punished. Yılmaz went down under pressure from makeshift right-back Dominik Szoboszlai, and referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot. At the other end, Cody Gakpo had just seen his shot cleared off the line, adding to Liverpool’s frustration.
Osimhen stepped up with confidence, blasting his penalty straight down the middle to notch his sixth goal in as many games against English opposition.
Liverpool Struggle for Rhythm
The visitors nearly equalized when Florian Wirtz unleashed a curling effort that Uğurcan Çakır tipped away, but otherwise the first half was riddled with errors from Arne Slot’s side.
Things got worse after the break when another defensive lapse allowed Osimhen to pounce on a poor back pass. He raced through on goal, only to be denied by Alisson, who injured himself in the process and had to be replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Slot turned to his bench, introducing Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley, and Mohamed Salah to spark a comeback. Despite their efforts, Liverpool struggled to break down Galatasaray’s organized defense.
Late Drama and VAR Intervention
As time ticked away, the Reds thought they had been handed a lifeline when referee Turpin awarded a penalty for a foul by Wilfried Singo. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned, leaving Liverpool with no way back.

Eight minutes of added time were not enough for the Premier League side, who slipped to their third consecutive away defeat against Galatasaray in European competition.
The result leaves Liverpool searching for answers ahead of a crucial domestic clash against Chelsea this weekend. Meanwhile, Galatasaray will take huge confidence from their victory as they look to build momentum in Group Stage competition.
