Oskar Sundqvist, Joel Hofer shine as the St. Louis Blues beat the Calgary Flames 3-0

Oskar Sundqvist notched a goal and an assist while rookie Joel Hofer secured his first career shutout with 27 saves as the St. Louis Blues triumphed over the Calgary Flames 3-0 during Thursday night's game.
Kasperi Kapanen and Nick Leddy found the net in the initial period, bringing St. Louis to an even record of 1-1-0 on their four-game journey. Sundqvist sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
"It's definitely a pretty cool feeling," said Hofer, aged 23. "I'm sincerely grateful to be in this position, and the team performed exceptionally well in front of me. I'm simply delighted to secure the win tonight."
"My dad enjoys holding onto memorabilia like this," he added. "So, I'll probably give it to him."
Calgary, on the other hand, suffered their fourth consecutive loss, bringing their record to 2-4-1, and they've been unable to score at home for nearly six periods. The Flames' sole goal in their previous match, a 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers, was scored just 75 seconds into the first period. As the game's final five minutes ticked away, boos rained down from the Saddledome crowd.
"I want to extend an apology to our fans," expressed Flames defenseman Nikita Zadorov. "We're not performing well right now. It's tough to watch."
For Hofer, this memorable night occurred in only his second start of the season. It marked a solid rebound performance after allowing six goals in a previous home game against the Arizona Coyotes one week ago. Hofer, originally from Winnipeg, notched his fifth career NHL win, serving as the Blues' backup goaltender this season behind Jordan Binnington. He was selected by St. Louis in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
"Obviously, this is great for my confidence," Hofer remarked. "I'm doing everything I can to support the team's success. I'll keep pushing the guys in practice and during games, and I'm thrilled with the win."
One of his most impressive saves occurred with just four minutes remaining in the second period when he deftly deflected a 20-foot wrist shot from Walker Duehr in a 3-on-1 rush.
"He was solid," praised Blues coach Craig Berube. "When he needed to make saves, he made them. I thought he was aggressive and handled the puck very well. He was completely focused tonight."
The Flames have struggled since their season opener, tallying a 1-5-1 record and scoring only 12 goals during that stretch.
"It's a privilege to play in the NHL, and I don't want anyone to forget that," emphasized Calgary defenseman Mackenzie Weegar. "I think we have 20 guys in this locker room who understand it's a challenging league, and you have to earn it. You have to earn your spot in this room and on the ice. We need to remember that."
Jacob Markstrom, the Flames' goaltender, made 32 saves but fell to a record of 1-4-1. He hasn't secured a win in his last five starts, and Calgary has managed just six goals in those games.
Up next, the Blues will face the Vancouver Canucks on Friday, while the Flames are set to host the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.
