Paris 2024: Adam Peaty begins bid to match Michael Phelps' record

Peaty's triumph in Japan, following his victory in Rio in 2016, presents him with the opportunity to match the achievement of American legend Michael Phelps as the sole male swimmers to have secured the same event at three consecutive Olympics.

This accomplishment would be particularly remarkable considering the mental health challenges he has faced.

In a conversation with journalists after his heat, Peaty adopted a relaxed and content demeanor as he anticipated his semi-final later on Saturday and the final on Sunday.

Upon seeing the results, Peaty remarked, "I noticed the scores coming in, and I felt that I didn't need to exert myself excessively or prove anything. However, we will see what happens tonight. We cannot win the battle now; we must win it tomorrow."

Peaty, who has grappled with depression and other issues, mentioned that he felt serene.

"Yes, very well. If anything, I am too relaxed in the sense that it doesn't feel like we are truly present at the moment.

However, completing that swim begins to awaken the mind, and I believe it is just a matter of experience where I understand that I do not need to expend energy at this point," he stated

The La Defense Arena was filled with a boisterous crowd, a stark contrast to the sparsely populated seats at the Tokyo Games affected by COVID-19. Peaty emphasized that the difference in atmosphere was not the only notable factor.

Peaty, reflecting on his past, remarked, "It was very, very different, but I was younger then, with more to prove and a touch more anger. Tonight, we have a task at hand, and the competition is fierce, so we must bring our A-game to secure a spot in the final in a favorable lane."

While Peaty has been vocal about his concerns regarding doping in swimming, particularly in light of the controversy surrounding the 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive but were allowed to compete in Tokyo, he stated that his focus is now on the present challenge.

"As an athlete, the issue of doping is always in the back of your mind. Fair play is crucial, and I strive to compete honestly alongside others who uphold the same values. That's all I'll say on the matter," Peaty expressed.

Acknowledging the importance of staying focused on the competition ahead, Peaty added, "We are all aware of the situation, but our primary goal is to perform well, so we cannot allow it to distract us from our path.".
