Paris Olympics: Chinese Women Win Gold in Diving, Kick Off Clean Sweep Bid

First-time Olympians Chen and Chang, who arrived in Paris with three consecutive world titles under their belts, secured victory with a total score of 337.68 points. The pair, aged 25 and 22 respectively, initiated the competition with a back dive in the pike position, receiving loud cheers from fans, many of whom donned China's team jackets and waved national flags.

The American team of Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook, performing the same routines, matched the Chinese duo's score in the second round, creating a tense moment. However, they fell short in subsequent dives, finishing with a silver medal on 314.64 points.

China's victory in this event extends their dominance, making it six consecutive Olympic titles since the event's introduction in 2000.

The Olympic Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis, north of Paris, hosted a lively crowd, with spectators filling the seats and creating a festive atmosphere. Many were draped in national flags, cheering as divers executed twists and somersaults before their final plunges.

Chinese diving legend Guo Jingjing, a four-time Olympic gold medallist in the 3m springboard event, refereed the competition and received a warm ovation when introduced on the screen.

Chen, currently the world number one, is set to compete alongside her best friend Chang in the upcoming 3m individual event, continuing their pursuit of Olympic glory.
