Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Manchester City: PSG stage stunning comeback to defeat Cityzens in Champions League thriller

Paris Saint-Germain produced a spectacular comeback to defeat Manchester City 4-2 in a thrilling Champions League encounter on Wednesday, dealing a major blow to City’s hopes of advancing past the league phase.
Despite trailing 2-0 early in the second half, PSG’s goals from Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, João Neves, and Gonçalo Ramos flipped the script, leaving the English side outside the playoff places and at risk of elimination.
"The team's faith is unshakeable," PSG manager Luis Enrique told reporters. "My team never gives up until the last second, and we've often shown that."
The dramatic turnaround began in the 56th minute when Dembélé converted Barcola’s precise cross. Four minutes later, Barcola equalized by tucking in a rebound after Désiré Doué’s thunderous shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
João Neves gave PSG the lead in the 78th minute, capitalizing on defensive chaos following Vitinha’s free kick. Ramos sealed the victory with a sublime strike from just inside the box, confirmed after a lengthy VAR review for offside.
City initially appeared poised for victory. Jack Grealish fired in a rebound from Bernardo Silva’s effort in the 50th minute, and Erling Haaland doubled the lead three minutes later, smashing in Grealish’s deflected cross.
However, City’s inability to control the game cost them dearly. Pep Guardiola acknowledged the team’s struggles, stating:
"To defend the result, you have to keep the ball. We didn't have it."
The win lifts PSG to 22nd in the standings, while City drops to 25th, just outside the playoff qualification zone. The top eight teams advance automatically to the last 16, while teams ranked 9th to 24th will battle in two-legged playoffs for a spot in the knockouts.
City’s hopes now hinge on their final group-stage match against Club Brugge on January 29. Guardiola remained cautiously optimistic:
"We accept the defeat because the best team won, and we have a last chance (to qualify) at home against Club Brugge. If we don’t win, we don’t deserve it."
PSG dominated large stretches of the game and had an Achraf Hakimi goal ruled out for offside just before halftime. After City’s quickfire second-half goals, PSG blitzed the defending European champions, exploiting City’s defensive lapses and shaky game management.
Reflecting on the collapse, Grealish admitted:
"I don't know, usually in these moments, we're so good. Obviously, it's happened too many times this season ... we've not been able to control the game and see it out."
While PSG travels to VfB Stuttgart for their final league-phase match, City faces a pressure-filled home clash against Brugge. With their Champions League hopes hanging in the balance, City will need to rediscover their composure to avoid an early exit.
