Patrice Motsepe Secures Second Term as CAF President

South African business magnate Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), securing a second four-year term. His re-election took place during CAF’s Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in attendance.
Motsepe, who initially took office in 2021, was hailed for bringing stability and governance reforms to the African football body. CAF Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba praised his leadership, stating, “Patrice was a gift for African football. In 2021, CAF was a toxic body. He brought good governance to all levels of the organization.”
The South African billionaire was first elected by acclamation in Morocco four years ago, succeeding Malagasy Ahmad Ahmad, who had been suspended by FIFA over financial misconduct. Motsepe’s tenure has seen an improvement in CAF’s financial management and increased investment in African football development.

In another key development, former Cameroon football legend Samuel Eto’o was elected to the CAF Executive Committee by acclamation. The 44-year-old was the lone candidate from the Central Africa region and became eligible for the position only last week after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned a CAF ban imposed on him.

Eto’o’s elevation to the CAF executive committee marks a significant milestone in his post-playing career. The former Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea striker currently serves as the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT). His leadership has been marked by both progress and controversy.
Eto’o’s Controversies and Legal Battles
Eto’o’s election comes after overcoming a turbulent period in his administrative career. In 2023, CAF banned him for alleged ethics breaches, specifically for his involvement as a brand ambassador for a betting company. He was fined $200,000 (€185,000) before the suspension was overturned.
Apart from the CAF ban, Eto’o has been involved in multiple controversies. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, he was caught on video assaulting a football supporter, an incident for which he later apologized. FIFA also banned him from attending all Cameroon national team matches for six months due to misconduct at the Women’s U-20 World Cup in Colombia.
Furthermore, Eto’o clashed with Belgian coach Marc Brys, who was appointed as Cameroon’s national team head coach in 2023, highlighting tensions within the country’s football administration.
A Storied Career in African Football
Despite the controversies, Eto’o remains one of the greatest African footballers of all time. He played a crucial role in Cameroon’s victories at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles in 2000 and 2002. He is also the all-time leading scorer in AFCON history with 18 goals.
His club career was equally remarkable, winning multiple UEFA Champions League titles and domestic league titles in Spain and Italy. As he transitions into football administration, his election to the CAF Executive Committee could signal a new chapter for African football leadership.
With Motsepe continuing his presidency and Eto’o joining the CAF Executive Committee, African football is poised for another era of transformation. Whether their leadership will further elevate the game across the continent remains to be seen, but these developments certainly mark a pivotal moment in CAF’s history.
