The formula may appear somewhat altered, with the defense and running game taking precedence for the Kansas City Chiefs. However, the outcomes remain strikingly similar as the two-time reigning champions continue to defeat opponents, particularly the San Francisco 49ers.

Patrick Mahomes managed to overcome two interceptions, making several significant plays with his legs, leading the Chiefs to maintain their status as the only undefeated team in the league by defeating the 49ers 28-18 on Sunday in a rematch of the Super Bowl.

“I don’t believe what you’ve observed from us is typical, as there have not been many passing touchdowns,” Mahomes remarked after experiencing back-to-back games without a touchdown pass for only the second time in his career.

“There have been numerous turnovers, particularly on my part. This illustrates the versatility of our team. It’s not solely about me, nor is it just about statistics and flashy plays.

It’s about playing as a cohesive unit, and I am confident that if we persist in our efforts, we will improve our offensive capabilities in terms of passing down the field. Until that time arrives, it is reassuring to know that we possess a strong running game, an excellent defense, and the ability to execute effectively when it matters most to secure victories.”

The Chiefs (6-0) achieved a season-high rushing total of 184 yards and recorded four touchdowns on the ground, marking the first time since the 2018 playoffs against Indianapolis that they accomplished this feat.

The defense contributed significantly, securing three interceptions against Brock Purdy and the 49ers (3-4) on a day when Mahomes recorded his second-lowest passing yardage ever (154) in a game where he was not injured.

Mahomes showcased his playmaking ability without relying solely on his passing. He executed a remarkable 33-yard scramble, evading Dee Winters by momentarily halting near the sideline before continuing his run. This impressive play set the stage for a 1-yard scramble on fourth-and-goal, where he powered through rookie safety Malik Mustapha at the goal line.

“He’s just a playmaker,” remarked Kareem Hunt, who contributed two rushing touchdowns. “Whenever the ball is in his hands, he can create opportunities with both his arm and his legs.”

While the stakes and overall quality of play did not match the intensity of their previous encounter eight months ago, when Mahomes and the Chiefs triumphed over the 49ers 25-22 in overtime to secure their third Super Bowl title in five years, the outcome remained consistent. Kansas City extended its winning streak against San Francisco to five games, which includes two Super Bowl victories.

However, the game carried a potentially significant cost for San Francisco. Star receiver Brandon Aiyuk was carted off the field after sustaining a right knee injury while making a catch late in the first half. Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed concerns that Aiyuk may have torn his ACL.

Aiyuk’s absence became critical late in the third quarter as the 49ers were attempting to overcome a 14-12 deficit. Purdy's off-target pass intended for backup receiver Ronnie Bell resulted in an interception by rookie Chris Roland-Wallace. The Chiefs capitalized on this turnover, converting it into a touchdown following two runs by Mahomes.

Mahomes completed 16 of 27 passes for 154 yards, bringing his season totals to eight interceptions and six passing touchdowns. Nevertheless, this performance has been sufficient for Kansas City to join the ranks of the 10 defending Super Bowl champions who have commenced the subsequent season with six consecutive victories.

Shanahan remarked, "Our offensive performance was lacking. I am certain he wishes he could reclaim all three of those interceptions. Brock has been exceptional this season, demonstrating notable skills on offense, but today was not reflective of that."

In his debut, rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall took the field exactly 50 days after sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest during a robbery attempt in San Francisco. Activated from the non-football injury list, Pearsall participated in his first play during the opening drive of the game. He recorded his inaugural career reception late in the second quarter, concluding the game with three receptions.

Pearsall expressed, "It meant everything to me, especially given the challenges I faced over the past month. It felt great to be back out there with my teammates."

His contribution was crucial, as San Francisco was without its top three receivers in the second half. Jauan Jennings was sidelined due to a hip injury, Deebo Samuel was limited to just four plays because of an illness, and Aiyuk sustained an injury late in the first half.
