Pegula defeats Sakkari in Adelaide, while Badosa and Ostapenko crash out

Jessica Pegula (30) dropped only five games enroute to defeating Maria Sakkari (29) in the Adelaide International on Wednesday, a delayed start to her season days before the Australian Open.
As the top seed and a finalist at the US Open, Pegula, who received a bye in the first round, decisively defeated the former world number three from Greece with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
Ranked seventh in the world, Pegula is set to face fellow American Ashlyn Krueger in the quarter-finals, following Krueger's victory over Spain's Paula Badosa, which ended with scores of 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-2.
In a surprising turn of events, defending champion Jelena Ostapenko was eliminated by 2022 winner Madison Keys, who triumphed with scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
"I had to weather the storm and stay in it; I'm pleased with how I managed that today," Keys remarked.
Having last competed at the WTA Finals in November, Pegula improved her head-to-head record against Sakkari to 6-5, as the Greek player continues her recovery from a shoulder injury.
"It's always challenging to secure the first win of the year, as there are many uncertainties," Pegula stated. "However, it is encouraging as I head into Melbourne next week. My primary focus is on performing well here first. I find it enjoyable to problem-solve on the court and maintain a positive attitude as the year begins."
Second-seeded American Emma Navarro, currently ranked eighth in the world, faced a more demanding challenge, taking two hours to overcome Ekaterina Alexandrova with scores of 7-6(4), 6-4.
Navarro will compete against another Russian player, Liudmila Samsonova, who advanced past Switzerland's Belinda Bencic with a scoreline of 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4, for a chance to reach the semi-finals.
In the men's draw, top seed Tommy Paul had to exert considerable effort to defeat French qualifier Manuel Guinard, who is ranked 261. Paul secured a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory and will next face Australian Rinky Hijikata, who triumphed over American Brandon Nakashima in three sets.
Second seed Sebastian Korda defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-3, while Canadian fifth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime rallied to beat France's Arthur Cazaux 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
