Pegula defeats Shnaider to set up Anisimova Toronto final matchup

Defending champion Jessica Pegula, ranked 30th, progressed to the final of the WTA Toronto Masters on Sunday by overcoming Diana Shnaider, ranked 20th, with a score of 6-4, 6-3. This victory provides Pegula the opportunity to become the first player to win the event consecutively since 2000.
In a match lasting 83 minutes, the sixth-ranked Pegula defeated the 24th-ranked Russian, setting up an all-American final on Monday against Amanda Anisimova, who triumphed over eighth-seeded Emma Navarro with a scoreline of 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Pegula aims to achieve the first Canadian repeat since Martina Hingis in 1999-2000 and holds a 2-0 record against Anisimova, with their most recent encounter resulting in a victory for Pegula in April at Charleston.
"She is arguably one of the most proficient and precise ball strikers I have ever faced, making it quite challenging when she is performing well," Pegula remarked regarding Anisimova.
"Tomorrow will undoubtedly be a contest, and I must focus on making her play additional shots while being aggressive when possible. When she is in form, she can produce numerous winners and dominate the match, so I need to strategize effectively for tomorrow."
Shnaider, a 20-year-old left-handed player, had a break point opportunity in the eighth game but faltered with a forehand error, allowing Pegula to maintain a 5-3 advantage.
Pegula then secured the match by breaking Shnaider during the longest rally of the contest, which consisted of 21 shots, concluding with Shnaider's backhand error.
This marks Pegula's 13th career final in the WTA, as she seeks her sixth title and second of the year, following her victory in Berlin in June.
Shnaider, who previously eliminated top-seeded and reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff, recently earned a silver medal in the doubles event at the Paris Olympics.
