Pereira knocks out Hill to retain UFC light heavyweight title

On Saturday night at UFC 300, Alex Pereira of Brazil delivered an impressive first-round knockout to successfully defend his UFC light heavyweight title against Jamahal Hill. Similarly, Zhang Weili managed to retain the strawweight belt by defeating Yan Xiaonan in an intense battle.
Pereira dismissed what appeared to be a low blow from Hill and then delivered a powerful left hook that sent the American sprawling backward onto the canvas.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Pereira swiftly attacked with a series of blows, ultimately leading to the stoppage at the 3:14 mark of the first round.
During a post-fight interview inside the cage, Pereira expressed his confidence in his strategy and acknowledged Hill's strength.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining his game plan, which involved assessing the distance and timing of his punches. Pereira was pleased with how everything unfolded, describing it as a perfect execution.
Hill had previously held the title in January 2023, but due to an injury sustained while playing basketball, he had to relinquish it in July.
Pereira, a decorated kickboxer and former UFC middleweight champion, stepped in and claimed the belt with a second-round knockout victory over Jiri Prochazka in November.
Despite the intense fight, Pereira revealed that he emerged relatively unscathed and expressed his desire to compete in the upcoming UFC card in Brazil scheduled for May. He reassured that he had not suffered any damage from his bout against Hill.
In the strawweight event featuring two Chinese fighters, Zhang showcased her dominance by nearly finishing the fight in the first round with a rear naked choke.
However, her 34-year-old opponent managed to survive until the bell, although she appeared unsteady as she regained her footing.
While Yan had some success in striking exchanges, Zhang consistently took the fight to the ground, asserting her dominance in grappling exchanges. This ultimately led to Zhang securing a unanimous decision victory.
The card's most thrilling conclusion came in the lightweight fight between Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje.
With just one second remaining on the clock after an intense five-round battle, Holloway delivered a thunderous right hand that folded Gaethje, resulting in a knockout victory.
