Peyton Watson's game-saving blocked shot was a year in the making and a measure of payback

Peyton Watson's timing proved impeccable nearly a year later in a comparable late-game scenario against the same prominent player.

On Wednesday night, the Denver Nuggets' dynamic forward successfully blocked a shot attempt by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder in the final seconds, securing a 124-122 victory for his team.

This moment stood in stark contrast to the events of last December in Denver, when Gilgeous-Alexander made a game-winning turnaround jumper with just one second remaining, overcoming Watson's outstretched defense.

Watson has not forgotten that pivotal moment.

He is unlikely to forget this one, either. His crucial block occurred immediately after he missed two free throws with 16 seconds left that could have sealed the game.

“I was thinking, ‘I need to make up for this. I have to contribute positively,’” Watson reflected on his defensive mindset. “Fortunately, I found myself in a position to assist my team and secure the win. It was definitely nerve-wracking. I should have converted my free throws, without a doubt.”

Following Wednesday's game, his mind returned to Gilgeous-Alexander's decisive shot on December 16, when the Thunder had staged a comeback for the victory.

Watson expressed satisfaction in achieving a measure of revenge as the Nuggets dealt the Thunder their first defeat of the season.

“I never ceased to think about it,” stated Watson, who was selected by the Nuggets at No. 30 through a draft-night trade with Oklahoma City in 2022. “I truly never stopped considering it.

I take pride in being the player who can handle late-game situations, particularly during crucial moments. (Gilgeous-Alexander) certainly had the upper hand on that occasion. He is an exceptional player and a leading candidate for the MVP award. His success is well-deserved.”

Watson played a pivotal role in the Nuggets' comeback from a 16-point deficit in the third quarter, contributing six of his ten points in the final period, along with three blocks.

Nuggets coach Michael Malone was particularly impressed by Watson's resilience after missing free throws, as he quickly refocused on defense.

“That’s what you appreciate about Peyton Watson,” Malone remarked, noting that his team ended a four-game losing streak against the Thunder. “That block was incredibly significant. I commend him for bouncing back after the missed free throws.”

The undermanned Nuggets relied on Watson's performance, especially with power forward Aaron Gordon (strained calf) and point guard Jamal Murray (concussion protocol) unavailable.

Denver received substantial support from a cadre of young players, including Christian Braun (24 points) and Julian Strawther (nine points).

“You hope this experience boosts their confidence,” Malone commented regarding their performance in critical situations.

This certainly applies to Watson.

“I have never been handed anything on a silver platter,” Watson remarked. “For me, it has always been about earning my place. Continuous hard work is essential to maintain my position. It’s all about progressing game by game.”

This particular block is one he will remember for a long time.

“It felt rewarding,” Watson concluded, “to achieve a bit of retribution tonight.”
