Phil Foden and Cole Palmer win PFA Player of the Year awards

Phil Foden of Manchester City has been honored as the 2023/24 PFA Player of the Year, while Chelsea's Cole Palmer received the PFA Young Player of the Year accolade during a ceremony held at Manchester's Opera House on Tuesday evening.

This achievement marks the first instance since the 2009/10 season in which both premier men's awards have been awarded to English players.

Foden's remarkable season, during which he scored 19 goals in 35 Premier League appearances, was instrumental in securing City's historic fourth consecutive title. At the age of 23, he has become the youngest player to achieve six league championships.

"Winning this award is incredibly special, and I am both proud and grateful. Being recognized by my fellow professionals means a great deal to me, and I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who voted for me," Foden expressed.

"I would also like to give special recognition to Pep, the coaching staff, and all my teammates, as they contribute to my continuous improvement every day."

Foden is now aiming for a fifth consecutive Premier League title, following City's successful title defense, which commenced with a 2-0 victory against Chelsea on Sunday.

"Last season was another remarkable one for everyone at the Club, but our current focus is entirely on achieving further success this season," he stated.

In addition, Foden was awarded the 2023-24 Premier League Player of the Season and recognized as the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.

Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City's Director of Football, remarked, "We are all delighted to see Phil receive this award. It is truly special to be acknowledged by your peers in such a manner."

"Phil exemplifies the values we uphold at Manchester City. He is an exceptionally talented player who consistently seeks to enhance his skills. He is also a humble individual who enjoys great popularity within the Club. We take immense pride in him."

The midfielder, hailing from Stockport, has now added the PFA Player of the Year trophy to his accolades, having previously secured the Young Player award on two occasions.

His exceptional performance was further validated by receiving both the Premier League Player of the Season and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year honors.

Foden triumphed over formidable competition from his Manchester City teammates Erling Haaland and Rodri, as well as Chelsea's Palmer, Arsenal's Martin Odegaard, and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins.

Cole Palmer wins PFA Young Player of the Year

Although Palmer did not win the top award, his remarkable debut season at Chelsea earned him the Young Player of the Year title. The 22-year-old's impressive tally of 22 goals in 34 Premier League appearances secured him a place in the England squad for Euro 2024, where he scored in the final match.

Palmer outperformed Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, former Crystal Palace player Michael Olise, and Brighton's Joao Pedro to claim the honor.

In the women's categories, Khadija Shaw of Manchester City was awarded Player of the Year, while Grace Clinton of Manchester United received the Young Player of the Year accolade.
