Phillies clinch NL East Title with dramatic extra-inning win over Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies are once again NL East champions. In a tense showdown at Dodger Stadium, the Phillies sealed their second consecutive division title with a dramatic 6-5 extra-inning victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. J.T. Realmuto delivered the decisive moment with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, sending Harrison Bader home and sparking celebrations in the dugout.
How the Phillies won it in extras
The Phillies started the 10th inning with Bader on second base under the MLB’s extra-inning rule. Kyle Schwarber lined out to second before Bryce Harper was walked intentionally. Bader and Harper executed a daring double steal, setting the stage for Realmuto’s deep fly to right field that brought Bader home for the go-ahead run.
The Dodgers, however, weren’t done yet. In the bottom half, they loaded the bases with Mookie Betts on second after David Robertson issued intentional and unintentional walks. With the crowd roaring, Max Muncy stepped up but grounded out to first base, ending the threat and the game.
Harper and Schwarber lead the way
Two-time MVP Bryce Harper once again proved his worth on the big stage. His solo home run off Alex Vesia in the eighth inning briefly gave Philadelphia a 5-4 lead. It was his 12th win in 15 head-to-head matchups against Shohei Ohtani’s teams since June 2022, underlining Harper’s dominance in marquee clashes.
Meanwhile, Schwarber etched his name into the record books. His 53rd home run of the season came in the first inning off opener Anthony Banda, and it was his 22nd against a left-handed pitcher. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that ties him with Stan Musial (1949) and Matt Olson (2021) for the most home runs by a lefty batter against left-handed pitching in a single season.
No. 9 hitter Weston Wilson also made his mark with a crucial two-run homer in the seventh inning, turning a 3-1 deficit into a 3-3 tie and sparking the Phillies’ comeback.
Dodgers battle but fall short
The Dodgers, who top the NL West, pushed the Phillies all the way. Andy Pages’ home run off closer Jhoan Duran tied the game at 5-5 in the ninth, forcing extra innings. Earlier, Mookie Betts drove in two runs with sacrifice flies and also homered in the seventh to level the score at 4-4.
Betts’ consistency has been remarkable, he and teammate Shohei Ohtani have now reached base in 20 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest active streak in Major League Baseball.
Max Muncy also added a solo home run in the fifth, his first since August 11, giving the Dodgers a temporary 2-1 lead.
On the mound, young starter Emmet Sheehan impressed by holding the Phillies hitless for 5 2/3 innings. He left with a 3-1 lead before the bullpen faltered.
Phillies rotation and postseason picture
Starter Ranger Suárez gave the Phillies six solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out five. His composure kept the game within reach before the bats came alive late.
The win not only clinched the NL East division title but also reaffirmed Philadelphia’s momentum heading into October. The Phillies had already secured a fourth straight postseason appearance on Sunday, despite a 10-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals.
