Porto secure first Europa League win with a strong victory over Hoffenheim

Porto concluded a streak of 17 UEFA Europa League matches without securing a clean sheet by achieving their first victory in this year's competition, defeating TSG Hoffenheim 2-0 and surpassing their rivals in the standings.

In their initial two league phase encounters against Bodø/Glimt and Manchester United, Porto scored within the first 10 minutes. They nearly found themselves trailing just 12 minutes into this match when Jacob Bruun Larsen missed a prime opportunity, heading wide from a corner while unmarked.

Hoffenheim initially appeared to have the upper hand in terms of chances, with Anton Stach's shot deflecting off Juventus loanee Tiago Djaló and narrowly missing the target. Adam Hložek also failed to convert, guiding Alexander Prass’ cross wide on the volley, while Bruun Larsen squandered another chance, lifting the ball over home goalkeeper Diogo Costa, only for it to roll out of play.

The visiting goalkeeper, Oliver Baumann, was called upon to make the only two saves of the first half, comfortably denying Pepê and later scrambling to prevent Samu Omorodion from scoring during a frantic sequence of play.

Just after Hložek had skillfully maneuvered past a defender and shot just over the bar, Porto took the lead in stoppage time. A strong challenge on Pepê by Stanley Nsoki resulted in a booking for the defender.

Nsoki's foul proved costly, as Francisco Moura delivered a well-placed free-kick that Nehuén Pérez headed down for Djaló to strike home emphatically.

Hoffenheim's manager, Pellegrino Matarazzo, opted to make substitutions midway through the second half, bringing on Mërgim Berisha, Umut Tohumcu, and Haris Tabaković.

However, the German side struggled to generate any creative momentum after the interval and were ultimately punished for their lack of offensive threat.

A lengthy punt down the field enabled Samu to leap above Stach. Although the defender attempted to redirect the ball towards Baumann, he inadvertently passed it to the Porto striker. Samu then maneuvered past Stach, biding his time before cutting inside and scoring, marking his fourth goal in the UEFA Europa League this season.

Porto has now achieved a minimum of two goals in five of their last seven UEFA Europa League matches, which will undoubtedly boost their confidence as they prepare to face AVS in league play on Sunday.

Conversely, Hoffenheim's unbeaten streak of three matches across all competitions has come to an unexpected halt, as they prepare for another away fixture in three days against Heidenheim.
