Premier League clubs to vote on scrapping VAR for next season

Premier League clubs will be voting on a proposal to eliminate the video assistant referee (VAR) from the upcoming season, as reported.

Wolves have officially submitted a request to eliminate VAR, leading to a league-wide vote at the upcoming Annual General Meeting.

The club emphasized that this decision was made after thorough consideration and with respect for the Premier League, PGMOL, and other teams.

They highlighted the need for a constructive debate on the future of VAR, stating that the current trade-off between accuracy and the essence of the game is not favorable.

The Premier League confirmed that the matter will be discussed at the AGM, recognizing the concerns raised by clubs regarding VAR.

Despite this, the league expressed its full support for VAR and its commitment to enhancing the system for the benefit of football and its supporters.

A two-thirds majority (14-6) will be necessary for the motion to pass during the vote. VAR has been implemented in the Premier League since 2019, but it has been involved in numerous high-profile incidents, especially in the past nine months.

In September, Liverpool's Luis Diaz had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside against Tottenham, and in November, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta criticized the system when Anthony Gordon's winning goal for Newcastle was allowed to stand.

Wolves have also experienced several controversial decisions, and Nottingham Forest recently raised concerns about the integrity of Stuart Attwell from the PGMOL following their defeat to Everton last month.
