Premier League to have Five Teams in 2025/26 Champions League

The Premier League has officially secured a fifth Champions League spot for the 2025/26 season after Arsenal’s emphatic 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.

This comes as part of UEFA’s new format that expands the Champions League to 36 teams and introduces two “European Performance Spots” (EPS), rewarded to the two best-performing leagues across all three European competitions: the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

Why Does the Premier League Get an Extra Spot?

UEFA ranks domestic leagues by a points system called the association club coefficient. Points are earned based on:

  • 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw (all European competitions)
  • Bonus points for reaching the latter stages (e.g. quarterfinals, semifinals)
  • Extra points for topping tables in each competition

All points are averaged across the number of clubs that started the season in UEFA competitions. Thanks to strong showings across the board — with five English clubs reaching European quarterfinals — the Premier League has locked down a top-two coefficient ranking, securing one of the two EPS slots.

How Five (or More) Premier League Teams Could Qualify

Confirmed for 2025/26 UCL:

  • Top five in the 2024/25 Premier League table now qualify directly.

Possible scenarios with more than five:

If an English club wins the Champions League or Europa League AND finishes outside the top five, they still qualify automatically, increasing England’s slots further.

For Instance:

  • If Aston Villa win the Champions League but finish 5th, the EPS drops to 6th place.
  • If Manchester United or Spurs win the Europa League and finish outside top five, they also qualify.

Maximum number of English clubs in next season’s Champions League: 7

Current Battle for the Top Five

With the Premier League now guaranteed five places in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, competition for a top-five finish has intensified significantly. Several clubs are closely matched in points, making the final stretch of the season highly competitive.

Chelsea and Newcastle United currently occupy fourth and fifth places, both with 53 points. However, Newcastle holds a slight advantage due to a game in hand. Manchester City, just one point behind with 52, are also in a strong position and have the squad depth and experience to climb further.

Aston Villa follows closely with 51 points and are still competing in the Champions League. Their European performance could impact the qualification scenarios further if they win the tournament. Fulham and Brighton remain in contention, sitting on 48 and 47 points respectively, though they are considered outsiders in the race.

Overall, the margin between fourth and ninth is narrow, and with only a handful of games remaining, the race for a Champions League spot promises to go down to the wire.

What About Other Leagues?

Spain (LaLiga):

  • Five clubs still active in Europe. On course for the second EPS.

Italy (Serie A):

  • Poor results in knockout rounds have left them behind. Still a mathematical chance, but unlikely.

Last season, Italy and Germany claimed the EPS spots. This year, England is leading comfortably.

What Next?

Premier League clubs will now battle it out not just for top four, but for that valuable fifth-place finish. European knockout rounds could also reshape the picture — especially if English clubs lift the UCL or Europa League trophies.

Premier League will send at least FIVE teams to the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. It could rise to SIX or SEVEN depending on results of Champions League and Europa League winners. The race for 5th place just got hotter, with Chelsea, Newcastle, City, and Villa all in the hunt
