Premier League Transfer Window: Record £3bn Summer Spend, Biggest Deals, and Club-by-Club Breakdown

The Premier League has smashed through another financial ceiling. Clubs collectively spent over £3 billion ($4bn) in the 2025 summer transfer window, setting a new all-time record and leaving Europe’s other top leagues trailing far behind. According to Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, spending by English clubs alone accounted for 51% of the combined outlay across the “big five” leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1).

The record was capped by Liverpool’s dramatic £125m British record signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United on deadline day. That deal closed a summer in which the Reds spent more than £400m, the highest total ever by a Premier League club in a single window. Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle each cleared the £200m mark, underlining the Premier League’s financial dominance.

This summer’s spending eclipsed the previous record of £2.36bn, set in 2023, by more than £650m. It also marked the third consecutive summer in which gross spending exceeded £2bn, but the first time it has crossed the £3bn barrier.

Tim Bridge, lead partner at Deloitte Sports Business Group, described it as a “clear signal that Premier League clubs are continuing to double down on their on-pitch investment” despite financial caution elsewhere in Europe.

How the Window Unfolded

  • Opening Phase: The market opened on June 1, paused briefly during the FIFA Club World Cup, and then resumed on June 16.
  • Deadline Day Drama: Alongside Isak’s record move to Liverpool, Newcastle landed Brentford’s Yoane Wissa for £55m, Aston Villa secured loans for Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho, while Man Utd completed a deal for Belgian keeper Senne Lammens.
  • High-Profile Exits: The summer also saw marquee players depart. Kevin De Bruyne left Manchester City for Napoli, Darwin Núñez swapped Liverpool for Al-Hilal, and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson joined Bayern Munich on loan.

Spending by Title Challengers

  • Liverpool: More than £400m spent, including £125m on Isak and £116m on German playmaker Florian Wirtz.
  • Arsenal: Around £267m, highlighted by Eberechi Eze (£67.5m) and Viktor Gyökeres (£63.5m).
  • Chelsea: Over £260m invested, with Joao Pedro (£60m), Garnacho (£40m), and teenage star Jamie Gittens (£51.5m).
  • Man City: More measured but still spent heavily, including Tijjani Reijnders (£46m) and Rayan Aït-Nouri (£36m).
  • Man Utd: Broke the bank with Benjamin Sesko (£73.7m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£71m).
