Promising talent Fonseca knocked out of Australian Open after loss to Sonego

Teenage prodigy Joao Fonseca, aged 18, was eliminated in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday by the experienced Italian player Lorenzo Sonego, who is 29, in a gripping five-set match.

The promising Brazilian made headlines by defeating ninth seed Andrey Rublev in the opening round and appeared poised for another surprise victory after securing the first set in Melbourne.

However, in a match characterized by fluctuating momentum, Sonego, ranked 55th, triumphed with scores of 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 after an intense three hours and 37 minutes of high-caliber tennis.

This defeat marked the end of a remarkable 15-match winning streak for Fonseca, who had garnered praise from tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic earlier in the week.

Sonego's next challenge will be against Hungary's Fabian Marozsan, who also triumphed in a five-set match against 17th seed Frances Tiafoe.

The first set was closely contested, culminating in a tiebreaker where Fonseca energized the crowd and emerged victorious.

However, he soon faced difficulties as a series of unforced errors allowed Sonego to break serve for a 2-1 lead in the second set.

The tenacious Italian continued to apply pressure, securing another break for 5-3, while his powerful serve left Fonseca with limited opportunities.

As Fonseca's performance began to falter, he was broken to love, failing to convert a straightforward net volley, which put him at a 3-1 disadvantage in the third set.

With his error count escalating, a comeback seemed unlikely.

Nevertheless, the young player rallied, capitalizing on a double fault from Sonego to break serve for a 2-0 lead in the fourth set, ultimately forcing a decisive fifth set.

With the audience firmly supporting him, Fonseca had a break point at 3-3 but was unable to convert.

This missed opportunity proved detrimental, as Sonego broke serve in the following game and closed out the match.

Last month, Fonseca became the second-youngest champion of the NextGen ATP tournament, following current world number one Jannik Sinner, who won the title at the same age five years ago. He subsequently claimed the ATP Challenger Tour title in Canberra before advancing through the qualifying rounds at Melbourne Park.
