PSG 5-2 Chelsea: Kvaratskhelia double punishes Blues in Champions League

Paris Saint‑Germain took a commanding step toward the Champions League quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea 5-2 in a dramatic round-of-16 first leg at the Parc des Princes.

Substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored twice late on to extend the lead for the defending European champions after a costly mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen sparked the decisive turning point.

Despite fighting back twice during the match, Chelsea ultimately collapsed in the final stages, leaving them with a three-goal deficit to overturn when the tie resumes in London.

PSG strike early through Barcola

The home side started the match aggressively and found the breakthrough within the opening 10 minutes. Bradley Barcola opened the scoring after Ousmane Dembele delivered a dangerous cross that was headed into his path. The winger powered a shot through a crowded penalty area and past Jorgensen to give PSG an early advantage.

Chelsea goalkeeper Jorgensen was soon called into action again, pushing a powerful strike from Dembélé onto the post to prevent PSG from doubling their lead.

Chelsea respond through Gusto and Fernández

Chelsea gradually grew into the game and found an equaliser through Malo Gusto. After a clever pass from Enzo Fernández released him into space, Gusto fired past PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov to level the match.

However, the momentum shifted almost instantly. Just seconds after Cole Palmer tested Safonov at the other end, Dembélé restored PSG’s lead with a composed finish after outrunning defender Wesley Fofana.

The move was initiated by the creativity of Desire Doue, who glided past challenges before threading the decisive pass.

Fernández levels the match again

Chelsea refused to back down and continued to push forward after the break. Their pressure paid off when Fernández equalised for the second time, finishing from close range after Pedro Neto intercepted the ball in midfield and delivered a low cross into the area.

For much of the match Chelsea had matched PSG’s attacking intensity, controlling midfield phases and showing tactical bravery away from home.

But the contest would soon turn dramatically.

Jorgensen error changes the Game

With the match delicately poised at 2-2, Jorgensen made a costly mistake while attempting to play out from the back. His misplaced pass fell straight to Barcola, allowing Vitinha to lob the stranded goalkeeper and restore PSG’s lead.

The error proved devastating for Chelsea, shifting momentum firmly back to the home side.

Kvaratskhelia delivers late brilliance

Moments later, substitute Kvaratskhelia produced the highlight of the evening. Cutting inside from the left, the Georgian winger curled a stunning shot from the edge of the box into the top corner, leaving Jorgensen helpless.

He then added a fifth goal with the final kick of the game, calmly side-footing the ball into the net to cap a ruthless PSG finish. The late surge transformed what had been a closely contested match into a commanding advantage for the hosts.

Chelsea left to reflect on costly mistakes

For Chelsea, the result was particularly frustrating given how competitive they had been for much of the match. The Blues matched PSG’s energy and creativity for long stretches but were undone by defensive lapses and moments of lost concentration.

Jorgensen’s mistake will likely draw the most attention, especially as he continues to compete with Robert Sánchez for the starting goalkeeper role. Chelsea’s discipline also came under scrutiny after Neto pushed a ball boy during a heated moment late in the game, an incident that could attract further UEFA attention.

Second leg challenge at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea must now attempt to overturn a three-goal deficit when the second leg takes place at Stamford Bridge next week. PSG, meanwhile, will enter the return fixture confident of finishing the job as they seek to defend their Champions League crown.

Before the decisive match, Chelsea return to domestic action with a Premier League clash against Newcastle United, while PSG have a full week to prepare after a Ligue 1 fixture was postponed.
