PSG beat Seattle Sounders 2-0 to reach Round of 16 at Club World Cup

Paris Saint-Germain marched into the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders on Monday night at Lumen Field. The reigning UEFA Champions League winners showcased their defensive might and clinical finishing, ensuring the Sounders' historic campaign ends at the group stage.
In front of a lively crowd of 50,628 fans, PSG not only controlled the tempo but didn’t allow the Sounders a single shot on goal, highlighting their dominance from the first whistle to the last. With the win, Luis Enrique’s side tops Group Bon goal difference, edging Atlético Madrid, who earlier secured a narrow 1-0 win over Brazil’s Botafogo.
Match Recap: PSG Control, Convert, and Advance
The breakthrough for the Parisians came in the 35th minute under somewhat fortunate circumstances. Vitinha’s long-range effort appeared destined to sail wide, but it took a deflection off Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, catching goalkeeper Stefan Frei wrong-footed as the ball nestled into the net. The goal, officially credited to Kvaratskhelia, gave PSG the lead their control deserved.
The second half brought more problems for Seattle’s defense. In the 66th minute, Achraf Hakimi found himself completely unmarked at the far post. Bradley Barcola’s pinpoint delivery gave the Moroccan right-back all the time he needed to take a touch and slot home PSG’s second goal, sealing the match.
Luis Enrique praises Seattle’s effort
Despite the defeat, PSG boss Luis Enrique was complimentary of his opponents: “I think it was a great match, difficult for us, tough from the beginning because Seattle played a great match with intensity and quality on and off the ball. I think all the supporters enjoyed the show, and I like the way we play.”
Paris Saint-Germain now look ahead to a Round of 16 clash on Sunday, June 22, where they will face Group A’s runner-up—either Palmeiras or Inter Miami—at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Paris Saint-Germain thrash Atlético Madrid 4–0 in Club World Cup statement win
While the Sounders' journey at the Club World Cup ends with a group-stage exit, the evening was marked by an emotional and long-awaited return for Jordan Morris, who made his first appearance since April.
The Seattle native, who helped lead the club to Club World Cup qualification, was welcomed back with a thunderous ovation from the Lumen Field faithful.
“This has been one of the toughest parts of my career in terms of missing this tournament,” Morris said post-match. “You drive around, see yourself on the bus ads, you want to be out there playing. Watching these guys compete and do so well in this tournament, I just wanted to be out there to try to help.”
Despite the early exit, Seattle’s qualification and spirited performances against world-class competition serve as a major milestone for MLS and the club’s trajectory on the global stage.
