PSG vs Chelsea Preview: Champions League Round of 16 Clash set for Parc des Princes

Paris Saint‑Germain and Chelsea FC meet again on Wednesday night in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, with revenge firmly on the minds of the French champions.

The last time these two sides faced each other was in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup in July 2025, when Chelsea delivered a stunning 3–0 victory to lift the global title. On that night, Cole Palmer stole the spotlight, leading a dominant Chelsea performance that left PSG frustrated and eager for another chance at redemption.

This week’s clash at the Parc des Princes marks their first Champions League meeting in nearly a decade.

PSG Team News

PSG’s season has been less dominant than usual despite entering the campaign as defending Champions League winners. Managed by Luis Enrique, the Paris club currently find themselves locked in a tight Ligue 1 title race with RC Lens.

Recent results have been inconsistent, including a 3–1 home defeat to AS Monaco in Ligue 1. Injuries have also disrupted the squad. Midfielder Fabián Ruiz is ruled out, while João Neves remains a doubt after missing training with an ankle issue.

However, PSG still possess plenty of attacking firepower, including. Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué.

Defensively, captain Marquinhos is expected to start alongside Willian Pacho, with attacking full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes providing width.

Chelsea Team News

Chelsea head to Paris with several injury concerns but still possess a strong squad for the first leg. Defender Levi Colwill remains sidelined with a long-term ACL injury, while Jamie Gittens is unlikely to feature.

Brazilian youngster Estêvão Willian is also doubtful with a hamstring issue. However, manager Liam Rosenior will be boosted by the availability of key players including Reece James, Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, João Pedro, Cole Palmer.

Both Enzo Fernández and Andrey Santos are one yellow card away from suspension for the second leg.

Recent Form

PSG: WWDWL
PSG have struggled for consistency in recent weeks and enter the match after defeat to Monaco in Ligue 1.

Chelsea: WDLWW
Chelsea arrive in Paris after a 4–2 FA Cup win over Wrexham AFC and have improved significantly since Rosenior took charge earlier this year.

Predicted Lineups

PSG:
Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Vitinha, Zaïre-Emery, Doué; Barcola, Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé

Chelsea:
Sánchez; James, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella; Caicedo, Santos; Palmer, Fernández, Neto; João Pedro

Match Outlook

With the tie played over two legs, Chelsea’s primary objective will be to avoid conceding too many away goals before the return leg at Stamford Bridge. PSG, meanwhile, will be desperate to gain revenge for last year’s Club World Cup final defeat and take a strong advantage back to London.

Given the attacking talent on both sides, the first leg in Paris could produce one of the standout fixtures of the Champions League knockout stage.
