PSV Eindhoven 1-1 Sporting Lisbon: Braganca rescues Sporting late on to earn point against PSV

PSV Eindhoven played to a 1-1 draw against Sporting CP at the Philips Stadion during the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) league phase, despite having taken an early lead.
Nevertheless, PSV maintained their remarkable unbeaten streak at home against Portuguese teams this century, recording two wins and three draws.
The two teams, both champions of their respective leagues, entered the match with flawless domestic records for the 2024/25 season. However, their experiences on matchday one of this tournament were quite different. The hosts suffered a significant 3-1 defeat to Juventus, yet they had reasons for optimism, having remained unbeaten at home in UEFA competitions over the past two seasons.
PSV began the match with the confidence of a team with such a record, taking the lead within the first 15 minutes. Jerdy Schouten netted his inaugural Champions League goal by capitalizing on a misplaced pass and skillfully placing the ball into the bottom corner from 25 yards out.
In contrast, Sporting, who had secured a 2-0 victory in their opening match against Lille, endured a disappointing first half. The visitors struggled to pose a threat to PSV’s goal, and their situation worsened when they were compelled to substitute their pivotal defender Ousmane Diomande due to injury with more than an hour remaining.
While Sporting managed to avoid further setbacks, the second half commenced similarly to the first, with PSV coming close to extending their lead. Ismael Saibari and Guus Til both had excellent opportunities that narrowly missed the target within the first five minutes after the break.
The hosts' aggressive pressing continued to trouble the Sporting defense, yet they failed to capitalize on their opportunities after regaining possession high on the pitch. Luuk de Jong, after skillfully maneuvering the ball with a delicate flick, narrowly missed the target by shooting just wide of the post.
It took the visitors nearly 70 minutes to generate their most significant opportunity of the match when Hidemasa Morita was set up on goal by Daniel Braganca. However, the midfielder became entangled with his own legs before he could take a shot, resulting in a fortunate escape for the hosts.
The most glaring miss occurred shortly before the final whistle when the typically dependable Johan Bakayoko seized on a poor backpass, rounded the goalkeeper, and inexplicably sent the ball wide of an unguarded net.
The home team faced severe consequences just minutes later, as Maximiliano Araujo’s deflected cross was converted by Bragança in front of an ecstatic away support.
Despite a frantic conclusion to the match, neither team was able to secure the crucial goal, resulting in a draw that extended Sporting’s unbeaten streak for the season to nine matches.
