PSV Eindhoven 1-7 Arsenal: Gunners thrash hosts to put one foot in Champions League quarter-finals

A ruthless Arsenal side delivered a dominant performance, dismantling PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday. A stunning three-goal burst in 13 first-half minutes set the tone before the Gunners piled on four more after the break, securing their biggest-ever away win in European competition and all but guaranteeing their spot in the quarter-finals.

Jurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 18th minute, followed by teenager Ethan Nwaneri’s close-range finish before Mikel Merino capitalized on a defensive lapse to make it 3-0 by the 31st minute. PSV briefly threatened a response when Noa Lang converted a penalty just before halftime, but Arsenal quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback with two goals in the opening three minutes of the second half. Captain Martin Odegaard pounced on a goalkeeping error to extend the lead, and Leandro Trossard followed up moments later with a composed finish over PSV keeper Walter Benitez.

Odegaard struck again in the 73rd minute, and substitute Riccardo Calafiori capped the rout with a late goal, completing a near-flawless night for the visitors at Philips Stadion. Arsenal’s relentless attacking display ensured they head into the second leg in a commanding position, where they will look to seal their place in the next round against either Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid.

PSV had a brief moment early in the match when they could have taken the lead, but Ismael Saibari’s close-range shot struck the crossbar after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya palmed away an Ivan Perisic cross. Just two minutes later, Arsenal seized control as Declan Rice provided a pinpoint cross for Timber, who rose above Lang to head home the opener.

The Gunners’ left-side attack was instrumental again for the second goal when Myles Lewis-Skelly set up Nwaneri for a clinical finish. The teenager’s strike was followed by Merino’s composed effort into the far corner after Timber’s determined run forced a defensive mistake from Ryan Flamingo.

A moment of controversy saw Lewis-Skelly escape a second yellow card for a reckless challenge, sparking furious protests from PSV players and staff. However, the hosts found a lifeline when Thomas Partey conceded a penalty for catching Luuk de Jong around the neck, allowing Lang to convert from the spot.

Any momentum for PSV quickly faded as Arsenal stormed out of the gates in the second half. Benitez’s miscue on a Nwaneri cross gifted Odegaard a tap-in before Trossard added a fifth with a delicate chip over the stranded goalkeeper. Odegaard then fired home his second goal before turning provider for Calafiori’s late strike after a surging run.

Despite struggling for goals in recent Premier League matches, Arsenal’s attacking brilliance was on full display, and Rice was unsurprised by the emphatic result. "We feel we've been playing well as a team. Sometimes we score five, sometimes two, sometimes we don't score but tonight we did well," he said.

For PSV, the night was one to forget as they became the first Dutch club to concede seven goals in a European match. Defender Olivier Boscagli acknowledged his team was outclassed. "They were simply better than us in everything," he admitted. "We let them play. And that's what they wanted to do. We were constantly running after them."

Arsenal will now look to finish the job at home as they aim for a deep Champions League run, while PSV face an uphill battle to salvage any pride in the second leg.
