PSV Eindhoven 3-2 Shaktar Donetsk: Tillman brace sparks comeback win for hosts

Malik Tillman delivered an extraordinary late double, followed by a decisive goal from Ricardo Pepi, as PSV Eindhoven staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 3-2 victory against 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League.

The visitors took the lead within just eight minutes, with Danylo Sikan quieting the home supporters by finishing off a swift counterattack, deftly converting Yukhym Konoplya’s right-wing cross from close range.

In response, PSV's Noa Lang was denied by goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk, who also made a crucial save against Ismael Saibari’s long-range effort and thwarted Johan Bakayoko’s attempt.

These saves proved pivotal as Shakhtar extended their advantage before halftime, with Oleksandr Zubkov receiving the ball in the box, shifting to his left foot, and curling a shot into the bottom corner, skillfully evading defender Ryan Flamingo.

Not content with a two-goal lead, Marino Pusic’s team nearly added a third after the interval, when a long-range volley from Pedro Henrique left Walter Benitez stranded, narrowly missing the target.

At the opposite end, Pepi's weak shot was saved, and the situation worsened for the visitors when VAR intervened to send off Pedro Henrique for a reckless challenge on Bakayoko.

This incident invigorated Peter Bosz’s squad, and after applying significant pressure, they managed to reduce the deficit late in the match, as Shakhtar’s goalkeeper inadvertently carried Tillman’s deflected free-kick over the line while attempting to make a save.

This set the stage for a thrilling conclusion, and Tillman was not finished yet; he equalized in the 90th minute with a stunning 25-yard strike that soared into the top corner, much to the elation of the home crowd, who had been anxious about facing their first home defeat in 90 minutes since November 2022.

Hirving Lozano had one last opportunity to strike from long range, but Riznyk executed another impressive save. However, deep into stoppage time, he was finally defeated for a third time when Pepi capitalized on a rebound, scoring from close range at the back post.

This moment marked a painful conclusion for Shakhtar, as their five-match winning streak in all competitions was halted, raising further concerns about their prospects of advancing to the UEFA Champions League knockout stage for the first time in seven years.
