Rashford Ends Goal Drought as Villa March Into First FA Cup Semi in a Decade

Marcus Rashford delivered a statement performance for Aston Villa, scoring twice in a commanding 3-0 victory over Preston North End to send Unai Emery’s side into the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in 10 years. The England forward, on loan from Manchester United, ended his long scoring drought in spectacular fashion, with Jacob Ramsey sealing the win in a dominant display at Deepdale on Sunday.

Rashford’s Revival at Villa Park

Since making the switch to Villa in the January transfer window, Rashford has been searching for the form that once made him one of England’s most promising talents. The 27-year-old had not found the net since scoring for United against Everton on December 1, and his move to Villa has provided him with a much-needed fresh start.

Under scrutiny for his attitude and off-field distractions, Rashford was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford by United manager Ruben Amorim, following tensions with former boss Erik ten Hag. But deployed in a central striker role that previously seemed to stifle his confidence, Rashford looked reinvigorated against second-tier Preston, proving too quick and clinical for the hosts to handle.

Villa’s FA Cup Dream Still Alive

Aston Villa, enjoying a remarkable campaign that has also seen them reach the Champions League quarter-finals, now find themselves just one step away from their first FA Cup final since 2015. The club last lifted the prestigious trophy in 1957 and will hope to end that long wait this season.

Preston, sitting 14th in the Championship, were making their first FA Cup quarter-final appearance since 1966. Paul Heckingbottom’s side came into the clash unbeaten in 15 home matches across all competitions but were ultimately outclassed by a relentless Villa attack.

How the Match Unfolded

Villa had early chances, with Rashford forcing a save from Preston goalkeeper David Cornell and Ezri Konsa heading just wide from a Marco Asensio cross. Preston’s Stefan Thordarson squandered a golden opportunity to take a shock lead, poking wide from close range.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 58th minute when Rashford timed his run perfectly to meet Lucas Digne’s low cross, finishing clinically from 12 yards out. Just five minutes later, Villa doubled their advantage. Morgan Rogers, a driving force in midfield, won a penalty after being brought down by Andrew Hughes. Rashford stepped up and coolly sent Cornell the wrong way from the spot, securing his brace.

Villa put the result beyond doubt in the 71st minute, as Jacob Ramsey powered into the Preston area before drilling a stunning strike past Cornell, marking his fourth goal of the season.

What’s Next?

With Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace already securing their semi-final spots, Villa await the final quarter-final result between Manchester City and Bournemouth to see who they might face at Wembley. Meanwhile, Rashford’s resurgence could be a game-changer for Villa’s ambitions in both domestic and European competitions.
