Rassie Erasmus return as head coach of South Africa

Rassie Erasmus confirmed to local media his return as head coach of South Africa, resuming the position held during the 2019 World Cup triumph. Jacques Nienaber, who led the recent World Cup victory, will depart for a role at Leinster after announcing his post-tournament plans.

Felix Jones, an assistant coach, will join Steve Borthwick's England set-up. Erasmus, who previously transitioned to South Africa's director of rugby after the 2019 victory, remained influential as the team secured its fourth World Cup title, notably defeating New Zealand in the recent final.

Erasmus plans to assume Nienaber's responsibilities, aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive World Cup win in 2027. Despite his revered status for innovation and tactical prowess, Erasmus faced controversy for criticizing referees, resulting in penalties from World Rugby and social media disputes with opponents.

Nonetheless, his ability to inspire the Springboks during crucial moments remains unquestionable. Known for pinpointing and addressing core issues, Erasmus is lauded for his tireless pursuit of advantages, as former assistant coach Matt Proudfoot expressed.

Other assistant coaches and team staff are expected to continue in their roles under Erasmus's leadership.
