Rayo Vallecano 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Conor Gallagher scores again as Atleti are held by Rayo

Atlético Madrid rallied to secure a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, marking the 15th consecutive match in which Los Franjirrojos have failed to defeat their local rivals.

The match commenced in a vibrant atmosphere at the Estadio de Vallecas, with both teams quickly engaging in action as Samuel Lino and Adri Embarba each had a shot saved within the first five minutes.

As the hosts maintained a positive approach and the game progressed, Atlético Madrid came closest to scoring as the first quarter of an hour elapsed. Augusto Batalla managed to catch a header from César Azpilicueta and subsequently thwarted Julián Alvarez, whose powerful shot struck the crossbar.

Isi Palazón earned a free-kick but failed to convert from Embarba’s precise delivery, while the captain experienced a moment of anxiety when a careless pass allowed Nahuel Molina to surge forward, only to see his weak shot easily handled by Batalla.

Despite this, Los Franjirrojos continued to dominate possession and created opportunities of their own, necessitating blocks from Axel Witsel and Reinildo Mandava to deny attempts from Pathé Ciss and Andrei Rațiu, respectively.

Shortly thereafter, Rațiu sent a low cross into the box, which Palazón redirected into the net for his first goal of the season. Concerns grew for Diego Simeone as Azpilicueta had to leave the field due to injury before the halftime break.

In response to the first-half display, the Atlético manager opted for an attacking strategy by introducing Antoine Griezmann and Ángel Correa at the start of the second half.

His decision paid off within five minutes, as Alexander Sørloth skillfully intercepted a through ball, creating an opportunity for Conor Gallagher, who calmly placed a shot into the bottom corner.
