RB Leipzig 2-0 St Pauli: Sesko, Simons on target as Die Roten Bullen defeat visitors to climb up to fourth

RB Leipzig maintained their impressive unbeaten streak against promoted teams in the Bundesliga, extending it to 35 matches with a 2-0 win over St. Pauli at the Red Bull Arena, thereby securing a position in the top four.

Despite having not scored in their previous four league encounters, Leipzig quickly rectified this issue, finding the net within just 16 minutes.

The match could have taken a different turn when St. Pauli's attempt to penetrate the area resulted in defender Castello Lukeba inadvertently deflecting the ball onto his own post. However, Leipzig regained control and launched a counterattack, with Xavi Simons delivering a precise through ball to Benjamin Sesko. The forward skillfully evaded David Nemeth's challenge and calmly finished past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj to open the scoring.

In their last match, Leipzig managed only two shots on target in a goalless draw against struggling Union Berlin. Yet, with their second attempt in this match, they successfully doubled their advantage.

After assisting Sesko for the first goal, Simons received a return pass from the forward, allowing him to strike from 12 yards and provide the home team with a comfortable lead at halftime.

St. Pauli struggled to find their footing in the second half, failing to create any significant threats to Leipzig's defense.

Their situation worsened when, with just over 20 minutes left, Leipzig's Willi Orban received a straight red card for a late challenge on Elias Saad, who was poised to go one-on-one with goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

The second half proved to be uneventful for the spectators, as St. Pauli could not capitalize on their numerical advantage. This played to Leipzig's benefit, allowing them to manage the remainder of the match without incident, thus ending their four-match winless streak in the league and reestablishing their place in the top four.

The Kiezkicker's three-match unbeaten streak was unexpectedly halted, leaving them in 14th place, seven points above the relegation zone. They continue to be the only team in this season's Bundesliga that has not recorded a draw in away matches.
