RB Salzburg 1-4 Atletico Madrid: Atleti cruise into Champions League last 16 with commanding victory in Salzburg

Atlético Madrid secured their advancement to the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) with a decisive 4-1 victory against RB Salzburg, marking their first instance of achieving three consecutive UCL away wins.

With their exit from the tournament already determined, Salzburg seemed to lack motivation, which was evident in their performance as Atlético quickly took control of the match.

Rodrigo De Paul attempted an early shot that went wide, but it took less than five minutes for the visitors to take the lead, courtesy of Giuliano Simeone, the son of manager Diego Simeone.

Receiving a pass from fellow Argentine Julian Alvarez, Simeone skillfully placed a shot into the bottom corner, setting Atlético on course for their fifth victory in six attempts on the final matchday of the UCL group stage.

Los Colchoneros were determined to maintain their lead, and they doubled their advantage before the 15-minute mark.

Simeone turned from scorer to provider, delicately lifting the ball over the advancing Salzburg goalkeeper Alexander Schlager and assisting Antoine Griezmann, who finished emphatically at the back post.

Griezmann was thwarted by Schlager from close range shortly thereafter but managed to increase his tally before halftime, expertly placing the ball into the bottom corner after receiving a pass from Samuel Lino, effectively putting the match out of reach.

After the break, Thomas Letsch’s side appeared more competitive, although this could be attributed to Atlético easing off their intensity.

Nevertheless, Atlético remained a constant threat on the counterattack, adding a fourth goal just after the hour mark when De Paul set up Marcos Llorente, who found the far corner with his shot.

Salzburg then shifted their focus to scoring their first goal at home during this league phase, which they achieved unexpectedly in the first minute of stoppage time. A long ball from Schlager found Adam Daghim, who executed a clever chip over Jan Oblak.

At last, there is a reason for celebration; however, Salzburg experienced their fourth consecutive defeat in the UEFA Champions League, each by a margin of at least three goals, concluding their European campaign in a disappointing manner.

In the final moments, Rodrigo Riquelme posed a threat for a fifth goal for Atlético Madrid, yet they achieved their fifth consecutive victory in the Champions League, thereby bypassing the play-offs and progressing directly to the Round of 16, thanks to a seventh consecutive triumph over Austrian teams in Europe’s top club tournament.
