Real Betis 1-1 Sevilla: Betis, Sevilla share the spoils in Seville derby

The 141st edition of El Gran Derbi ended in a draw for the fourth consecutive league meeting as Sevilla and Real Betis Balompie played out a 1-1 result at Estadio Benito Villamarin.

In the early stages of the match, Isco, seeking to punish his former team, delivered a corner that found Johnny Cardoso at the back post. However, Cardoso mistimed his header and ended up shouldering the ball over the bar. Both teams received a yellow card each within the first 16 minutes, living up to the intense reputation of the clash.

Midway through the first half, the visitors thought they had scored when Lucas Ocampos headed the ball into the Betis net. However, the goal was disallowed as Ocampos was offside.

Despite the disallowed goal, Betis struggled to create chances until the final 10 minutes of the half. Pablo Fornals had a shot cleared off the line by Sergio Ramos after goalkeeper Orjan Nyland could only push the ball into his path.

Following a partially cleared corner, Fornals attempted another shot on goal, but Dodi Lukebakio blocked it with his hand, resulting in a penalty for Betis. Isco stepped up and successfully converted the penalty, giving Betis the lead despite Nyland getting a touch on the ball.

In the second half, Quique Sanchez Flores' team pushed forward aggressively, leaving themselves vulnerable at the back. Betis nearly capitalized on this with long balls forward to Cedric Bakambu and Ayoze Perez, but both were denied by Nyland.

However, Sevilla's attacking approach paid off 10 minutes into the second half. From Marcos Acuna's corner towards the near post, Kike Salas rose to head the ball powerfully past Rui Silva, equalizing for Sevilla.

Later on, Betis thought they had a chance to regain the lead when the referee awarded them another penalty for an apparent foul on Isco by Loic Bade. However, VAR overturned the decision.

Manuel Pellegrini's team pushed for a late winner, but Nyland saved an Isco strike, and an Abde Ezzalzouli header hit the bar, coming closest to scoring.

The end of Betis’ two-match winning run not only dents their European hopes but sees them go 11 derby matches without a win, the longest run in the fixture’s history. Sevilla, meanwhile, move 12 points clear of the drop zone as their own winning streak ends at three games.
