Real Madrid 1-1 Al-Hilal: Alonso era begins with draw as Valverde misses late penalty

Xabi Alonso’s managerial debut for Real Madrid ended in frustration as the Spanish giants were held to a 1-1 draw by a spirited Al-Hilal side in a pulsating FIFA Club World Cup group clash at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The night saw missed chances, VAR drama, and a late penalty save that secured a memorable result for the Saudi club under new boss Simone Inzaghi.

Fast-Paced Start, Saudi Brilliance

In front of 62,000 fans in Miami, Al-Hilal stunned many with their sharpness from the opening whistle. Salem Aldawsari, the man who famously netted against Argentina in Qatar 2022 — was a livewire, creating early problems for Real’s backline. In the 19th minute, his volleyed ball back into the box was met by Marcos Leonardo, whose effort fizzed just wide.

Renan Lodi thought he had put Al-Hilal ahead shortly after, only for VAR to rule the goal offside. Aldawsari remained dangerous, darting in behind and narrowly dragging a shot wide, further underlining the Saudis’ attacking intent.

Rodrygo and Gonzalo Combine for Madrid Opener

Real Madrid grew into the match around the half-hour mark, and it was Rodrygo -cutting inside from the right — who nearly broke the deadlock with a fierce curling strike. Moments later, Madrid’s quality showed.

A blistering counterattack launched by Gonzalo (starting in place of Kylian Mbappe, who missed out due to injury) saw a slick one-two unfold on the right. Rodrygo delivered a pinpoint ball into the six-yard box, and Gonzalo — who had continued his run — finished delicately to make it 1-0.

It was a classic Real Madrid goal, forged in transition and finished with class, silencing Al-Hilal’s early momentum.

Neves Penalty levels it for Al-Hilal

Al-Hilal didn’t back down. Just four minutes before halftime, Marcos Leonardo was brought down in the box by Raúl Asencio, and the referee pointed to the spot. Portuguese international Rúben Neves stepped up and coolly slotted the penalty past Andriy Lunin, drawing the Saudi champions level.

The equalizer injected new life into the contest, and Aldawsari nearly restored Al-Hilal’s lead minutes later, his quick feet and low shot narrowly missing the post.

Second Half Reaction: Güler sparks, Valverde falters

Alonso reacted with changes at halftime, introducing Arda Güler, who immediately made his presence felt with a stunning volley that struck the crossbar following a cross from Vinícius Jr.

Gonzalo also continued to shine, drawing a superb save from Yassine Bounou with a bullet header, before Federico Valverde flashed a shot just wide from long range.

Real Madrid appeared to be turning the screw, dominating possession and creating a flurry of chances, but Al-Hilal’s defensive organization and Bounou’s composure held firm.

As the match approached full time, Real were gifted a golden opportunity to win it. VAR spotted Mohammed Al-Qahtani with a hand in Fran García’s face during a tussle in the box. The referee awarded a penalty to the Spaniards.

Federico Valverde, who had been lively throughout, stepped up — but Bounou dived low to his right and parried the effort away, sparking wild celebrations among the Al-Hilal bench.

Simone Inzaghi, in his first match in charge of Al-Hilal, was full of praise for his players:

“We stood up to Real Madrid, one of the best teams in the world. I couldn’t have asked for more. It’s a huge result for us moving forward.”

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso, taking charge of Madrid for the first time, admitted his side took too long to settle:

“In the first half we lacked rhythm, control and balance. But the second half showed the kind of football we want to play — with pause, tempo, and attacking intent. We’ll build from this.”

The result leaves Group E wide open with Real Madrid and Al-Hilal both on one point. Real will face River Plate in their next match, while Al-Hilal will meet FC Seoul. Alonso will want a win to ensure progression, while Inzaghi’s men will believe they can cause more upsets.
