Real Madrid 1-2 Arsenal (1-5 agg): Gunners Knock Out Los Blancos to Reach UEFA Champions League Semifinals

Arsenal stunned holders Real Madrid with a 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night, completing a 5-1 aggregate triumph and booking a blockbuster Champions League semifinal showdown against Paris Saint-Germain.

Goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli sealed a historic night for Mikel Arteta’s men, who returned to the UCL semifinals for the first time since 2009.

Saka Shines Despite Penalty Miss

Bukayo Saka missed an early Panenka-style penalty but responded brilliantly with a sensational dinked finish over Thibaut Courtois in the 56th minute.

“We had so much belief and confidence from that first leg and came here to win the game... We knew we were going to suffer but we knew we were going to win,” said Declan Rice post-match.

Real Madrid pulled one back minutes later through Vinícius Jr, capitalizing on a rare mistake by William Saliba, but Arsenal remained composed.

In stoppage time, a blistering counter-attack started by David Raya led to Martinelli’s cool finish, putting the result beyond doubt and confirming Arsenal’s semifinal clash with PSG.

Arteta: “One of the best nights of my football career”

Head coach Mikel Arteta lauded the result as a milestone in Arsenal’s modern history:

“To be able to win the tie in the manner we have done... we have to be very proud of ourselves... This is only the third time in our history and we have to build on that.”

Arsenal’s collective display, from midfield dominance by Rice to defensive solidity by Saliba and Jakub Kiwior, proved crucial. The Gunners neutralized Real’s threat despite a five-minute VAR drama that saw a Madrid penalty decision overturned following a soft challenge involving Kylian Mbappe and Declan Rice.

Real Madrid Left Searching for Answers

It’s the first time in four years that Madrid have failed to reach the UCL semis.
