Real Madrid 2-0 Girona: Modric turns back the clock as Los Blancos clinch narrow win over Girona

A late goal in each half secured a 2-0 victory for Real Madrid against Girona, allowing them to draw level on points with Barcelona at the summit of LaLiga. Additionally, this match marked Real Madrid's fourth consecutive victory over Girona without conceding a goal.

The visitors initiated the match with an attempt in the fifth minute, as Arnau Martínez tested Thibaut Courtois from a challenging angle. However, Real Madrid quickly responded, with Kylian Mbappe forcing Paulo Gazzaniga into action just moments later.

A beautiful combination of play around the 15-minute mark saw Vinicius Junior head the ball over the crossbar, and he faced further frustration when Daley Blind thwarted him at the conclusion of a rapid counterattack.

Confronted by a steadfast Girona defense, Real Madrid exhibited patience in their approach. Brahim Díaz unleashed a powerful shot that Gazzaniga managed to deflect, while Luka Modric's follow-up effort sailed over the goal.

Girona also ventured forward when opportunities arose, with Donny van de Beek creating a moment of concern for Real Madrid. However, a swift counterattack was halted by an impressive intervention from Ladislav Krejci, who prevented Vinicius' pass from reaching Mbappe.

Just before halftime, Modric delivered a moment of brilliance, chesting down David Lopez’s attempted clearance and striking a stunning shot into the top corner to open the scoring.

Gazzaniga thwarted another attempt from Mbappe, and Krejci successfully defended against Rodrygo’s header. Nevertheless, Real Madrid secured their second goal in the 83rd minute.

Vinicius combined with Mbappe to nudge the ball past Gazzaniga, ensuring that Los Blancos ended their three-match winless streak in La Liga and now trail league leaders Barcelona only on goal difference.

The hosts also delivered Girona their seventh loss in the last eight matches across all competitions.
