Real Madrid 2-1 Rayo Vallecano: Mbappe and Vinicius Junior on target as Los Blancos defeat Rayo

Real Madrid has equaled the points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona after securing a narrow 2-1 victory at home against Rayo Vallecano, marking only their second win in the last six league matches.

In light of Barcelona's unfortunate postponement yesterday and Atletico Madrid's defeat earlier in the day, the stage was set for Real Madrid to conclude the weekend in a tie for the top position.

After a moment of tribute before the match commenced, Carlo Ancelotti’s squad began with a commanding performance, clearly intent on achieving victory ahead of their significant UEFA Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid later in the week.

Los Blancos nearly took the lead in the 15th minute when Rodrygo sprinted down the right side and delivered a pass to the edge of the penalty area, where Vinicius Junior struck the post with his attempt.

The home side maintained their pressure and broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when Kylian Mbappe was sent down the left flank, capitalizing on a fortunate bounce to slot the ball into the far corner.

Minutes later, the lead was extended through a display of exceptional individual skill. Vinicius collected the ball on the left, maneuvering through Rayo's defenders before finishing past Augusto Batalla.

Mbappe had a chance to effectively seal the match shortly thereafter, but he was thwarted by the Rayo goalkeeper, which allowed the visitors to reduce the deficit just before halftime.

After a quick exchange, Pedro Diaz unleashed a stunning shot that struck the crossbar and crossed the line, leading to an extensive VAR review that ultimately confirmed the goal.

Upon the resumption of play, the dynamics shifted due to Rayo’s late first-half goal, with Madrid finding it challenging to assert their dominance as they had in the opening stages. Mbappe had a chance in the 55th minute but failed to replicate his earlier precision, sending his shot wide of the target.

The second half was characterized by a lack of action, with Madrid surprisingly unable to register a shot on target during this period and surrendering more than two-thirds of possession. Although Rayo ended the match with a superior presence, they were unable to convert their dominance into scoring opportunities.

This outcome signifies a fourth consecutive home victory for Ancelotti’s squad in all competitions; however, focus will now shift to their upcoming short journey across the city to the Metropolitano Stadium for their Champions League match.
