Valverde hat-trick fires Real Madrid past Man City in Champions League clash

Real Madrid took a major step toward the Champions League quarter-finals after a brilliant hat-trick from Federico Valverde secured a 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their round-of-16 clash at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Valverde’s three goals all came in a devastating first-half display that stunned Pep Guardiola’s side and ignited the Madrid faithful. The Uruguay international also made history, becoming the first Uruguayan player to score a Champions League hat-trick.
The emphatic result gives Madrid a strong advantage heading into the second leg in Manchester.
Madrid silence pre-match doubts
Heading into the tie, there were concerns surrounding the Spanish giants. Recent league defeats and the adjustment to a new head coach had left supporters uncertain about the team’s form. Their narrow win against Celta Vigo the previous weekend, sealed by a late deflection, only added to the anxiety.
However, the early minutes against City quickly shifted the mood inside the Bernabéu. While City initially showed attacking intent, Madrid’s clinical counterattacking ultimately decided the match.
Valverde strikes twice in quick succession
Manchester City began brightly and nearly took the lead through early attempts from Antoine Semenyo and Jérémy Doku. But Madrid punished them ruthlessly.
The breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a long pass that caught City’s defense off guard. Valverde raced onto the ball, rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma and finished from a tight angle to give Madrid the lead.
Seven minutes later the midfielder doubled the advantage. After linking up with Vinícius Júnior, Valverde unleashed a low left-footed strike that beat Donnarumma and sent the Bernabéu crowd into celebration. City suddenly found themselves chasing the game.
A Hat-Trick for the Record Books
Valverde completed his remarkable treble just before halftime with arguably the pick of the goals. A swift counterattack saw Vinícius drive forward before releasing Brahim Díaz. The midfielder delivered a delicate chipped pass that allowed Valverde to flick the ball past defender Marc Guéhi before smashing a powerful volley into the net.
The strike capped one of the most memorable individual Champions League performances of the season. “It’s incredible, nights like this are what you dream about,” Valverde said afterward. “I just try to get forward and support the attack. My teammates gave me incredible passes and the confidence to play my game.”

Missed chances fail to change outcome
Madrid continued to threaten after the break. Vinícius Júnior had a chance to extend the lead when he was brought down in the penalty area by Donnarumma. However, the goalkeeper redeemed himself by saving the Brazilian’s spot kick.
Despite the miss, Madrid remained firmly in control. Young talent Arda Güler and Vinícius both came close to adding a fourth, while City struggled to create consistent opportunities.
Erling Haaland nearly pulled one back for City but was denied by a crucial defensive intervention from Antonio Rüdiger.
A difficult night for Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s team entered the match with hopes of controlling the tie early, but Madrid’s ruthless finishing left them with a mountain to climb. City showed flashes of attacking promise through players like Bernardo Silva and Nico O’Reilly but lacked the cutting edge needed to trouble Madrid consistently.
The defeat also capped a difficult two days for English clubs in Madrid following Tottenham’s heavy loss to Atlético Madrid earlier in the week.
Second leg awaits in Manchester
The two sides will meet again next week in Manchester for the decisive second leg. Despite the heavy defeat, City will still hope to stage a comeback at home — something Guardiola’s teams have occasionally managed in Europe.
But with a three-goal advantage and momentum firmly on their side, Real Madrid will travel to England confident of finishing the job and progressing to the quarter-finals.
