Real Madrid 3-2 Almeria: Los Blancos comeback from two down to win five-goal thriller amidst VAR controversy

Real Madrid staged an impressive comeback, overturning a 2-0 deficit to secure a remarkable 3-2 victory against UD Almería in La Liga. This triumph not only prevented a historic home defeat against Los Rojiblancos but also propelled them ahead of the surprising title contenders, Girona.

In less than 40 seconds, Almeria managed to astonish the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. With precision, Sergio Arribas intercepted Nacho Fernandez's lackadaisical pass and initiated an attack that resulted in Largie Ramazani's shot slipping past Kepa Arrizabalaga's outstretched foot upon his return to the starting lineup.

Real Madrid appeared far from their dominant form, as evidenced by Rodrygo's feeble attempt that missed the target during their best opportunity in the first 15 minutes.

Despite being at the bottom of LaLiga, Almeria displayed confidence, with Sergio Akieme venturing forward to deliver a tempting cross that Arribas couldn't convert into a goal.

The visitors showcased organization and a willingness to fight, exemplified by captain Lucas Robertone.

As the first half progressed, the frustrations of the hosts grew, and Jude Bellingham seemed particularly displeased.

The situation worsened when Nacho made another poor pass, which was capitalized on by Edgar Gonzalez with a sensational strike just before halftime. The dissatisfaction among the fans at the Bernabeu was evident as the whistle blew for the break.

In response, Carlo Ancelotti made three substitutions before the restart, immediately increasing the intensity of the game. Two of those substitutes played a crucial role in earning their team a lifeline, as Kaiky handled Fran Garcia's cross under pressure from Joselu.

Bellingham confidently converted the resulting penalty, sparking joyous celebrations. This penalty was the first of three decisions assisted by VAR that left Gaizka Garitano furious. Arribas had a goal disallowed, and despite calls for a handball, Vinicius Junior's goal stood.

Bellingham thought he had secured the victory for Los Blancos, but Garcia was deemed offside when setting him up.

Even after Gaizka Garitano was sent off, the Englishman played a part in the winning goal. In the 99th minute, his header at the back post was turned home by Dani Carvajal, securing all three points for the 35-time LaLiga champions. This victory propelled them ahead of Girona, who would face Sevilla later in the day.

On the other hand, Almeria experienced a devastatingly familiar feeling of disappointment as their search for their first league win this season continues.
