Real Madrid held to goalless draw by Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga

Real Madrid were frustrated to a goalless stalemate away at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, as the hosts became the first team to prevent the LaLiga leaders from scoring this season.
The result elevated Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid to 31 points from 12 fixtures, maintaining a five-point cushion over second-placed Villarreal, while Rayo occupy 12th position on 15 points.
The draw also provides an opportunity for third-placed Barcelona to reduce Real's advantage to three points when they face Celta Vigo later on Sunday before the international break commences.
Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla emerged as the standout performer of the match after the Argentine produced numerous saves to thwart Real, while the home side defended with remarkable determination to preserve their clean sheet.
Real Madrid's winless streak at Vallecas continues
LaLiga's top scorer Kylian Mbappe, who has found the net 13 times in league competition, endured a subdued afternoon after the Frenchman was limited to just one attempt as Real failed to secure victory at the Estadio de Vallecas for the fourth consecutive year.
"I'm happy with the work of the team, we had chances as well to get three points. We fought till the end, we were up against a great team but at one point we decided to look after the result and take the point," a beaming Batalla said.
"We were up against a terrific team... We played really well to level things up because they're better than us. We had to have more intensity but Real were also very committed and it was an even game.
"We always talk about how we should work defensively. There's no secret to it, it's all about hard work. I wouldn't have made those saves if we didn't defend well."
Batalla faced early pressure when Arda Guler challenged him with a low strike in only the third minute while Vinicius Jr also compelled a quality save from the Argentine when he unleashed a quick shot on the turn inside the box.
Mbappe remained largely invisible as the Frenchman failed to register a shot in the opening half while Raul Asencio had arguably Real's clearest opportunity when he found himself unmarked in the box but his header from a Brahim Diaz cross sailed wide.
Disjointed first half precedes second-half pressure
The opening period proved disjointed with the referee constantly reaching into his pocket and issuing five yellow cards.
Real intensified the pressure following the interval and Guler witnessed another attempt from distance drift wide.
Both Mbappe and Jude Bellingham also weaved into the box with possession, only for Rayo's resolute defence to suffocate their attempts to release a shot in time.
There was anxiety for Real when Federico Valverde requested a substitution late in the contest with what appeared to be a hamstring problem, with Trent Alexander-Arnold replacing him at right back.
Guler nearly secured victory at the death for Real in stoppage time but the 20-year-old watched his effort drift agonisingly wide as Rayo celebrated a valuable point.
