Real Madrid Win Intercontinental Cup: Ancelotti Breaks Club Record with 15th Trophy

Real Madrid added another feather to their illustrious cap, outclassing Mexican side Pachuca 3-0 to win the FIFA-backed Intercontinental Cup in Doha on Wednesday. The triumph marked Carlo Ancelotti’s 15th trophy as Madrid’s manager, making him the most decorated coach in the club’s history.

Mbappé Shines in Return

Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior were instrumental in Madrid’s commanding victory. Mbappé, returning from a hamstring injury, opened the scoring in the 37th minute after a dazzling assist from Vinícius, who was recently crowned FIFA Best Men's Player.

Rodrygo extended the lead early in the second half with a stunning curling effort, despite controversy surrounding Jude Bellingham’s positioning. The referee upheld the goal after a VAR review, determining that Bellingham’s presence did not obstruct the goalkeeper.

Vinícius completed the rout six minutes from time, converting a penalty awarded after Lucas Vázquez was fouled in the Pachuca box, following another VAR check.

Pachuca Overwhelmed

Despite boasting experienced players like Salomón Rondón, CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Pachuca struggled to match the Spanish giants’ tempo. Madrid’s midfield dominance and clinical finishing ensured the Mexican side never posed a significant threat.

“It was a tough start given the long journey and limited preparation, but we adapted well and showed our quality,” Madrid’s Fede Valverde remarked.

Ancelotti's Historic Moment

For Ancelotti, the win solidifies his legacy at Real Madrid. With 15 trophies, he surpasses Miguel Muñoz as the club's most successful manager. Reflecting on the achievement, Ancelotti said, “It’s an honor to coach the best club in the world. Success here is easier because of the incredible talent and support.”

The victory also serves as a morale booster for Madrid, who have endured challenges this season. “This win gives us confidence as we approach 2025. The team has grown significantly since our struggles in November,” Ancelotti noted.

The Intercontinental Cup’s New Era

This was the inaugural edition of the revamped Intercontinental Cup, which mirrors the old Club World Cup format. The tournament will expand to 32 teams in 2025, marking a new chapter in international club football.

Madrid’s dominance in such competitions remains unparalleled. The club previously won the Intercontinental Cup three times (1960-2004) and lifted the Club World Cup five times.

What's Next for Madrid?

Real Madrid will close out their La Liga calendar with a clash against Sevilla on Sunday before heading to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup in January. Their busy schedule also includes a rematch with Pachuca at next year’s Club World Cup in the United States, where they could face Neymar-led Al Hilal and Red Bull Salzburg.

Madrid’s latest triumph underscores their status as the world’s most successful football club, with no signs of slowing down.
