Real Sociedad 1-1 Manchester United: Txuri-Urdin hold Red Devils to draw in Round of 16 first leg

Manchester United concluded the first leg of their UEFA Europa League (UEL) last 16 encounter against Real Sociedad with a 1-1 draw, leaving the outcome of the tie precariously balanced.
This result marked the eighth occasion in their last nine European away matches in Spain that they have avoided defeat (W5, D3).
The significance of Manchester United's visit to the Reale Arena was heightened following their recent penalty shootout loss to Fulham in the FA Cup, making the UEL their sole remaining opportunity to secure a trophy and ensure European qualification for the upcoming season.
Under considerable pressure, the Red Devils commenced the match positively, with Alejandro Garnacho testing goalkeeper Álex Remiro within the first 15 minutes in San Sebastian.
Ruben Amorim’s team maintained a more threatening presence throughout the first half, coming agonizingly close to scoring through Bruno Fernandes and Joshua Zirkzee, both of whom were thwarted in quick succession by Aritz Elustondo’s outstanding defensive efforts, resulting in the visitors failing to score for the fifth time in six UEL matches.
Shortly after the second half began, another opportunity slipped away from United as Garnacho's shot from a tight angle struck the side-netting.
Nevertheless, their determination eventually bore fruit just before the hour mark, when Joshua Zirkzee found the net from the edge of the box, having been set up by Garnacho’s cutback.
Zirkzee’s inaugural UEL goal provided his team with a lead that lasted a mere ten minutes, as Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty, sending Andre Onana the wrong way after Bruno Fernandes was adjudged to have handled the ball.
The hosts, buoyed by their momentum, posed a significant threat to send United back to England empty-handed. Initially, Brais Méndez's long-range shot required a full-stretch save from Onana, followed by Orri Oskarsson missing a prime opportunity by shooting wide of the post after receiving a pass from Sheraldo Becker.
In stoppage time, Oskarsson again tested Onana, who made a vital save. Ultimately, the Premier League team managed to maintain their composure, ensuring the match ended in a draw and preserving their unbeaten record in the UEFA Europa League this season, ahead of the upcoming return leg at Old Trafford.
