Real Sociedad 1-2 Rayo Vallecano: Rayo begin LaLiga season with shock victory over hosts

In one of the most significant surprises of the LaLiga opening weekend, Jorge de Frutos' goal that broke the deadlock propelled Rayo Vallecano to a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena, marking their first win in this matchup since January 2015.
As Rayo Vallecano commemorates its centennial during the 2024/25 season, the visiting team nearly achieved an ideal start to their landmark campaign. The dynamic full-back Andrei Ratiu demonstrated his determination by bypassing Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro with ease, only to have his shot thwarted by the retreating Jon Pacheco, who prevented the ball from crossing the line.
In response to this near miss within the first 30 seconds, the home side came close to scoring first, as Brais Mendez directed a header from Sheraldo Becker’s exquisite cross just inches wide of the target.
Shortly thereafter, Rayo’s new goalkeeper, Daniel Cardenas—who took over following Stole Dimitrievski’s transfer to Valencia—was called into action, making an impressive save by deflecting Benat Turrientes’ powerful long-range shot over the crossbar.
As the match approached the final third of the first half, Cardenas received a significant reprieve when Aritz Elustondo inexplicably directed a glancing header wide of an open goal, leaving the first half without a decisive goal from either team.
Having previously opened a new top-flight season with only one win from five attempts, Becker squandered a chance to put Sociedad ahead shortly after the break, sending his one-on-one effort against Cardenas soaring into the stands.
The missed opportunity by the Suriname international would ultimately prove detrimental to the hosts in the 67th minute, as de Frutos propelled Rayo into the lead with a powerful shot that found the back of the net, following exceptional build-up play from Abdul Mumin.
Even with midfield virtuoso and Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi on the field for the second half, Rayo appeared unfazed.
Substitute Sergio Camello sealed the victory with six minutes remaining in regular time, executing a composed finish past Remiro.
Zubimendi managed to score a late consolation goal with nearly the final kick of the match, but time was not on his side.
This significant victory ends Sociedad's nine-year dominance in their head-to-head encounters; however, it represents merely one skirmish in an ongoing contest, as Rayo will have just under a week to prepare for their upcoming match against Getafe on Saturday.
