Reece James says 10-man Chelsea “could have won” after hard-fought draw with Arsenal

Reece James believes Chelsea sent out a major message about their progress after holding Premier League leaders Arsenal to a 1–1 draw on Sunday, despite playing more than half the match with 10 men.

The London derby at Stamford Bridge delivered tension, drama and relentless intensity, and James, returning to captain the side, felt Chelsea showed enough quality and control to win the game outright.

Moises Caicedo’s red card in the 38th minute, upgraded after a VAR review for a heavy challenge on Mikel Merino, changed the tone of the match instantly. Chelsea were forced to reorganise, tighten their shape and rely on sharp transitions to keep Arsenal honest.

But the setback didn’t break them.

Chalobah breaks through, Merino pulls Arsenal level

Just three minutes into the second half, Chelsea struck with the kind of precision that has become a hallmark of Enzo Maresca’s team. James delivered a pinpoint corner and Trevor Chalobah rose above Arsenal’s defence to guide a powerful header into the net.

Arsenal eventually responded in the 59th minute. Bukayo Saka, always a threat on the right, whipped in a perfectly weighted cross for Merino to nod past David Raya and haul the league leaders level.

Chelsea refused to retreat into a shell. They continued to push forward when opportunities appeared, with Pedro Neto causing trouble down the right flank and substitute Liam Delap forcing a sharp save from Raya in the 78th minute.

James: “We dominated every area”

After the match, James praised the team’s mentality and insisted the performance said more about Chelsea’s ambitions than the result itself.

“We played 60 minutes with 10 men… but to be honest, it was a game we felt we probably could have won,” he said. “It was difficult to only walk away with a point considering how well we did.”

James highlighted both the defensive resilience and attacking intent as proof of the squad’s progression.

“We dominated the whole game in every area throughout,” he added. “I think that was a big statement on where we are and what we’re fighting for.”

The draw keeps Chelsea third in the Premier League table with 24 points, six behind Arsenal, who remain top.

What comes next for Chelsea

The Blues now shift their attention to a midweek trip to Leeds United, where they hope to build on Sunday’s gritty performance. With confidence rising and squad depth beginning to shine, Maresca’s side continue to look like one of the real threats in this season’s title race.
