Richarlison scores first goal of the season as Spurs edge out AZ Alkmaar

Richarlison's penalty in the second half secured Tottenham Hotspur's flawless record in this season's UEFA Europa League (UEL), resulting in a 1-0 victory in the English capital and marking a fifth consecutive competitive defeat for AZ Alkmaar, equaling the longest losing streak in the club's 57-year history.

Initially, Maarten Martens' AZ had a promising start to the campaign, but recent losses have severely impacted their momentum. Tottenham dominated the early stages of the match, aiming to increase the pressure on the former Belgium international.

The best opportunity for the hosts during this period came from Timo Werner's inswinging cross, which Mikey Moore unfortunately directed just wide at the far post. AZ soon created their own chances, with Denso Kasius' cross going unchallenged as it swept across Tottenham's six-yard area.

The first half continued with both teams exchanging attacks. Werner's shot lacked the power to match the quality of a brilliant pass from Lucas Bergvall, while Fraser Forster made a crucial save against a strong header from Alexandre Penetra.

Both teams appealed for penalties, but referee Manfredas Lukjančukas remained unresponsive, resulting in the first goalless half for Spurs in their last seven matches.

Ange Postecoglou opted to reposition Moore to the left after halftime, where the young player excelled, skillfully evading defenders before forcing Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro to intervene and prevent his cross from finding the net.

The breakthrough came shortly thereafter when Lucas Bergvall was fouled by Maxim Dekker while attempting a shot, allowing Richarlison to calmly convert the penalty, chipping the ball down the middle.

Moore nearly extended the lead following a dynamic run, but his final pass failed to reach either the target or a teammate.

Troy Parrott, having progressed through the youth ranks in north London, sought to respond by setting Mayckel Lahdo free against the Spurs defense, but Forster was once again up to the task.

The prospect of a comeback was ultimately extinguished by David Møller Wolfe’s second red card in consecutive matches, allowing Spurs to secure a narrow victory.

The Lilywhites continue their unbeaten streak in the UEFA Europa League, which dates back to 2020. However, a disappointing result at home against Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday may lead to an abrupt conclusion of Martens’ tenure in Alkmaar.
