Roma 1-0 Dynamo Kyiv: Roma secures first Europa League win of the season

AS Roma concluded a four-match winless streak in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) by securing a 1-0 victory against Dynamo Kyiv at the Stadio Olimpico. This result leaves the visitors at the bottom of the table, having failed to achieve either a win or a goal.

The Giallorossi have experienced a challenging start to the season, managing to win only two of their first ten matches across all competitions before this encounter.

Ivan Juric's squad has faced difficulties in scoring, having netted just once in their previous three games, making a cautious opening period somewhat expected.

The home team controlled possession, and midway through the first half, they were awarded a penalty. Tommaso Baldanzi displayed impressive footwork to evade Taras Mykhavko, who subsequently brought him down as he entered the box.

Artem Dovbyk took the penalty and successfully converted from 12 yards, marking his fourth goal of the season before halftime.

Baldanzi then attempted to extend Roma's lead but shot wide after cutting inside. However, the visitors soon began to pose a threat, with Eduardo Guerrero heading over the bar and Oleksandr Tymchyk demonstrating excellent chest control before volleying just off target.

Guerrero later directed a low shot directly at Mile Svilar, while Denys Popov had a goal disallowed for offside as the first half concluded, providing a timely respite for Roma.

After a shaky first half, the Giallorossi emerged more assertive in the second half, yet converting their dominance into clear scoring opportunities proved challenging.

Juric opted to bring on Lorenzo Pellegrini and Paulo Dybala in search of creativity, but the hosts continued to face difficulties, leading to rising tension within the Olimpico.

Their anxiety was exacerbated when Svilar misjudged a corner, but fortunately for him, Mykola Mykhailenko could only direct his header wide.

The home team quickly regained their dominance, yet opportunities continued to be squandered, particularly by Eldor Shomurodov, who inexplicably shot wide following a remarkable and complex play.

Fortunately for Roma, these missed opportunities did not have detrimental consequences, as they secured a crucial victory that may serve as a catalyst for their UEFA Europa League campaign.

Conversely, Dynamo's prospects for advancement appear bleak, as they extended their winless streak in this tournament to 11 matches, marking their 18th loss in the last 27 encounters with Italian teams.
