Roma put Europa League quarter-final with Milan to bed

AS Roma progressed to the semi-finals of a European competition for the fourth consecutive year, securing a 2-1 victory to complete a 3-1 overall win over AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico in this thrilling UEFA Europa League (UEL) quarter-final second-leg clash.

In a rainy evening in the Italian capital, accompanied by sporadic hailstones, Milan's initial strategy was to maintain possession and keep Roma on their toes. However, fate had other plans in store for them.

During an attacking move, Lorenzo Pellegrini's audacious shot struck the post, leaving Mike Maignan helpless, and the rebound fell perfectly for Gianluca Mancini, who calmly slotted the ball into an empty net, doubling Roma's aggregate advantage.

If fate was unkind to Milan with the first goal, it can only be described in unspeakable terms for the second. On one end, Ruben Loftus-Cheek's shot inside the box deflected off Mile Svilar's crossbar, and Matteo Gabbia missed the target with a header from a corner.

Within a mere two minutes, Romelu Lukaku embarked on a counter-attack that had the Milan defense scrambling. Although his shot was blocked, Matteo Gabbia's misplaced pass fell into the path of Paulo Dybala, who expertly curled the ball into the far corner, igniting the Stadio Olimpico crowd's excitement to the maximum.

Unfortunately, Roma also faced misfortune as Romelu Lukaku had to leave the field due to injury, and Zeki Celik received a red card for a reckless studs-up tackle on Rafael Leao in the 30th minute.

Milan's response was not particularly strong, but a brief scuffle in the Roma penalty area led to VAR examining a potential handball by Chris Smalling. However, Szymon Marciniak upheld his original decision and did not award Milan a lifeline.

Stefano Pioli implemented a tactical change during halftime, substituting Loftus-Cheek with Samuel Chukwueze. This decision exemplified Milan's determination to take risks and seize any opportunity. The Rossoneri began the second half strongly, earning a series of corner kicks. However, Roma had an opportunity to secure their victory when Leonardo Spinazzola embarked on an impressive solo run and took a shot, only to be denied by Maignan's save in the bottom-left corner of the net.

Nevertheless, Milan managed to create some tension in the closing minutes of normal time by scoring a goal.

Gabbia partially redeemed himself for his earlier mistake by making a powerful header at the near post, connecting with Leao's well-delivered cross. This goal brought Milan within two goals of forcing extra time.

In response, Roma decided to focus on the fundamentals and prevent any further chances for Milan. They successfully held on to their lead and advanced to the next stage, keeping their hopes alive for a second European trophy in three seasons.
